This is getting more and more annoying every day.
Why don't you people just READ the damn site on how to unsubscribe?
How were you able to even SUBSCRIBE it without reading?!

Sorry, but that's just repeating too much...

I assume there's some kind of spam filter for this list already, so
maybe a rule could be added to delete any email with "unsubscribe" in
the subject or body?

Hi Brian!

Great idea!

Set up a filter in your local email client to do that as well. If the
one doesn't get it the other will.

But then how could we have all these delightful discussions about
"unsubscribe"? I mean, that filter would get rid of this e-mail.

Then again, I suppose that's exactly what it deserves. :-/

Wow! This is spectacular! Not only did he sent out the unsubscribe
mail the (most popular) wrong way, he also made the faux pas of
hijacking a thread! If only two wrongs can make a right q=

Thank You! I was wondering what top-posting was as well and all these
idiotic responses of "you just did it" does help cause then one would
just go "What did I do? as far as I know I just replied."

Well for instance ... It makes it so the conversation is ass
backwards... You usually read a book from the top down... Not bottom
up. FYI... I am not normally a top poster.

Well, it breaks up the continuity of the thought of an email. It also
promotes one of two things, either removing the entirety of the previous
email, or leaving a big honking mess at the bottom of the email, just
like the one that you sent had. What is probably the most courteous
method of quoting is to post your messages within what you are quoting,
underneath the text you are referring to, and removing any texts that
are not relevant to your response. This email is a good example.

Here's how to unsubscribe:

First, ask your Internet Provider to mail you an Unsubscribing Kit.
Then follow these directions.

The kit will most likely be the standard no-fault type. Depending on
requirements, System A and/or System B can be used. When operating
System A, depress lever and a plastic dalkron unsubscriber will be
dispensed through the slot immediately underneath. When you have
fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection marked by the large "X"
outlet hose. Twist the silver-coloured ring one inch below the
connection point until you feel it lock.

The kit is now ready for use. The Cin-Eliminator is activated by the
small switch on the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its
initial condition, so that the two orange lines meet. Disconnect.
Place the dalkron unsubscriber in the vacuum receptacle to the rear.
Activate by pressing the blue button.

The controls for System B are located on the opposite side. The red
release switch places the Cin-Eliminator into position; it can be
adjusted manually up or down by pressing the blue manual release
button. The opening is self-adjusting. To secure after use, press the
green button, which simultaneously activates the evaporator and
returns the Cin-Eliminator to its storage position.

You may log off if the green exit light is on over the evaporator. If
the red light is illuminated, one of the Cin-Eliminator requirements
has not been properly implemented. Press the "List Guy" call button on
the right of the evaporator. He will secure all facilities from his
control panel.

To use the Auto-Unsub, first undress and place all your clothes in the
clothes rack. Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet
immediately below. Enter the shower, taking the entire kit with
you. On the control panel to your upper right upon entering you will
see a "Shower seal" button. Press to activate. A green light will then
be illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob, select the
desired setting. Now depress the Auto-Unsub activation lever. Bathe
normally.

The Auto-Unsub will automatically go off after three minutes unless
you activate the "Manual off" override switch by flipping it up. When
you are ready to leave, press the blue "Shower seal" release
button. The door will open and you may leave. Please remove the velcro
slippers and place them in their container.

If you prefer the ultrasonic log-off mode, press the indicated blue
button. When the twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. The
knob to the left, just below the blue light, has three settings, low,
medium or high. For normal use, the medium setting is suggested.

After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by
switching to the "ON" position the clearly marked red switch. If
during the unsubscribing operation you wish to change the settings,
place the "manual off" override switch in the "OFF" position. You may
now make the change and repeat the cycle. When the green exit light
goes on, you may log off and have lunch. Please close the door behind
you.

Neil, how much time did you spend on that email?

Also, as a gentoo user I consider my computing powers to be a cut above the
Mandriva, Red Hat, W.I.M.P.S And as fellow gentoo users, I consider all of
you to be in that same class. Not bragging, but just stating the obvious.
Many of us have been using Gentoo since it came in a 32MB tar ball. From
that we defined and deployed a very usable operating system. So why is that
every week we find a Subscriber who can't get themselves take off a mailing
list.

I administer a small network of maybe a hundred users or so. Even they can
do it and they don't even know their using linux!!!!!!!!

Longer than I'd have liked, because Claws Mail used the godawful GTK file

Please Note: In some later model unsubscribe kits, the "OFF" indicator has
been replaced by "POWER-UP STANDBY ENABLE". Accordingly the "ON" indicator
has been replaced by the much clearer, "POWER-DOWN STANDBY ENABLE". Contact
your internet service provider for a list of affected model numbers. An
"ON-OFF" retrofit panel kit is available for those who have difficulty with
the new and much clearer labeling.

First, ask your Internet Provider to mail you an Unsubscribing Kit.
Then follow these
directions. The kit will most likely be the standard no-fault type.
Depending on
requirements, System A and/or System B can be used. When operating
System A, depress
lever and a plastic dalkron unsubscriber will be dispensed through the slot
immediately underneath. When you have fastened the adhesive lip,
attach connection
marked by the large "X" outlet hose. Twist the silver- coloured ring
one inch below
the connection point until you feel it lock.

The kit is now ready for use. The Cin-Eliminator is activated by the
small switch on
the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its initial condition,
so that the two
orange lines meet. Disconnect. Place the dalkron unsubscriber in the
vacuum receptacle
to the rear. Activate by pressing the blue button.

The controls for System B are located on the opposite side. The red
release switch
places the Cin-Eliminator into position; it can be adjusted manually
up or down by
pressing the blue manual release button. The opening is self-
adjusting. To secure
after use, press the green button, which simultaneously activates the
evaporator and
returns the Cin-Eliminator to its storage position.

You may log off if the green exit light is on over the evaporator . If
the red light
is illuminated, one of the Cin-Eliminator requirements has not been properly
implemented. Press the "List Guy" call button on the right of the
evaporator . He will
secure all facilities from his control panel.

To use the Auto-Unsub, first undress and place all your clothes in the
clothes rack.
Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet immediately below.
Enter the shower,
taking the entire kit with you. On the control panel to your upper
right upon entering
you will see a "Shower seal" button. Press to activate. A green light
will then be
illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob, select the
desired setting. Now
depress the Auto-Unsub activation lever. Bathe normally.

The Auto-Unsub will automatically go off after three minutes unless
you activate the
"Manual off" override switch by flipping it up. When you are ready to
leave, press the
blue "Shower seal" release button. The door will open and you may
leave. Please remove
the velcro slippers and place them in their container.

If you prefer the ultrasonic log-off mode, press the indicated blue
button. When the
twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. The knob to the left,
just below the
blue light, has three settings, low, medium or high. For normal use, the medium
setting is suggested.

After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by
switching to the
"ON" position the clearly marked red switch. If during the
unsubscribing operation,
you wish to change the settings, place the "manual off" override
switch in the "OFF"
position. You may now make the change and repeat the cycle. When the
green exit light
goes on, you may log off and have lunch. Please close the door behind you.

Harry, your directions to Mr. Freeman were clear and concise. I didn't
realize that the process of unsubscribing was so simple. I believe you
forgot one thing though. He will, at some point, need to wash his mouse
out with soap. If he uses the Auto-Unusb feature, this can easily done
while he's in the shower, but if he uses some other proceedure, some
other provision must be made for completing this step.

Lindsay,
even your directions, still being in the right track, miss the obvious
caveat: the user has to be warned (for the sake of completeness) that
he must be particularly wary if he owns a cat - in that case the
auto-unsub feature might not work and require manual intervention.

That's correct. It's recommended that a list subscriber unsubscribe
from any cat he or she may own prior to attempting any other unsubscribe
procedure as described by Mr. Holt. I believe, however, that a
discussion of the process of unsubscribing from a cat is rather
seriously OT for this list.

NO!! You joined and we are going to hold you hostage. You can check out
but you can never leave. LOL :-D

http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/lists.xml

Go to that link and follow the unsubscribe instructions. Then you may
leave. Don't forget to reply to the confirmation otherwise you are not
checked out yet.

If you check the headers, the email link is there as well.

Nope. Ain't going to happen. Why? You ain't doing it right yet. Try
this:

Send a email to:

gentoo-desktop+unsubscribe@lists.gentoo.org

When it sends you a confirmation, hit reply and send. Then you can
unsubscribe from the list. You can also check the headers for the info
too.

P. S. I do get a kick out of these. People figure oout how to get on
here but can't get off here. lol

Especially when every single message contains these useful headers:

List-Post: <mailto:gentoo-desktop@lists.gentoo.org>
List-Help: <mailto:gentoo-desktop+help@lists.gentoo.org>
List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:gentoo-desktop+unsubscribe@lists.gentoo.org>
List-Subscribe: <mailto:gentoo-desktop+subscribe@lists.gentoo.org>

And, of course, when people sign up they are sent this information:

Not to mention the very first result for "gentoo mailing list" on google is:
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/lists.xml

(which contains the above mentioned information and more)

And let's not forget, they almost certainly got the instructions to
subscribe off the Gentoo mailing list page. Most any mailing list I
have ever seen has the instructions to subscribe and unsubscribe on the
same page.

Sort of weird people can't remember how they subscribed.
