K3b used to be my best CD creating and duplicating app, but today when I
tried to do a CD copy the program apparently wouldn't recoginze the source
CD for copying. I can see the CD-R unit (Sony CD-RW CRX230E) with diskinfo,
and this unit shows up as the "CD Reader Device" in the CD Copy dialog,
however the Start button in this dialog is disabled and nothing I do seems
to enable it. If I start k3b from a cli prompt, I get a dozen or so lines
of "k3b: ERROR: (K3bDevice::Device) Unable to do inquiry." although this may
have no bearing on the problem.
I also have CD-Roast, which has no such problems, but is a much messier and
less well engineered app, so I'm hoping someone can help me get k3b back on
track again. It _used_ to work just fine!
I'm running k3b on top of gnome, but this seems to make no difference. Same
result if I run it in KDE.

Under Settings -> Devices, what devices does it show? And do they exist?
Could be a udev problem. Maybe it doesn't generate both devices under /dev.

That seems like a device permissions problem, to me. Run k3bsetup (it
should prompt for the root password), and verify group ownerships. Then
ensure you are in the correct group as you set it to use.
You can of course verify that it's ownership/permissions by attempting to
run k3b as root and check if the start button enables, there. I'd not
recommend making it a habit, or even doing the burn, just verifying
whether the thing gives you the option, as it's one way to test whether
the problem is permissions or not, as long as you are reasonably sure you
/trust/ the app to run as root. That of course is up to you.

I had this problem as well. Did you upgrade K3b lately? I emerged the
latest version and this happened. I went back to the previous version I
had installed and now it works fine.

Yeah ... I had a version of k3b that would only see the devices as root.
I'm running 0.12.8 at the moment, and it sees the devices as non-root.

I am using the 0.2.10 version [masked] and it works great.

That's what I'm running here, and I haven't unmasked it. Perhaps you mean
~amd64 keyworded?
There's a difference between masked (listed in package.mask, also known as
"hard" masked, indicating either serious known issues, or something so
raw upstream that there could be unknown serious issues yet to appear) and
~arch keyworded (~ denoting either an upstream beta released on Gentoo for
testing, in preparation for upstream full release, thus a version not
likely to ever go stable, or an upstream release with no known serious
issues, but where the Gentoo ebuild hasn't been fully tested yet, thus an
upstream version considered stable, with a Gentoo ebuild in line for
stable after testing).
Especially for those of us running ~arch by default, that difference is
huge, because it's the difference between being merged by default in an
upgrade, and requiring manual unmasking to get it to merge.
