Hello,

on/after the last council meeting the biggest problem with g54 seemed
to be whether to use scm or live suffix. I would like to do a small
poll here among council members so that I can edit the glep
accordingly. So, could you please state whether you prefer scm or
live?

I prefer "_live" for various reasons:

- Almost everybody calls them "live ebuilds" not "scm ebuilds"
- There may be live ebuilds not related to source code management
(app-portage/eclass-manpages might be an example), and ebuilds
fetching their sources from a fixed tag in an SCM system, therefore
  not being live.
- No confusion with the Scheme language.

Ulrich

I prefer "live" for the same reasons above "scm" in any contexts
relating to ebuilds.
This vote (of mine) is not to be taken as an endorsement of g54 of
course, as I take it as a terminology preference question.

Yes, that's what the poll is all about.

i prefer "scm", but "live" does make more sense like Ulrich points out

Some more bikeshedding:

Such ebuilds won't necessarily fetch from source code repositories,
some ebuilds[1], fetch the latest snapshot instead, essentially
"live".

1. www-client/chromium-bin-9999 -- fetches the latest developer snapshot build

I agree with Mike here. I personally like "scm" better but Ulrich does
bring good points why "live" would be better.

But honestly folks, this isn't a technical item. It's a frivolous
pretty item. If this is really the cause for some people's objections,
then you really do not belong on the council because you're not
dealing with TECHNICAL issues.

Are you voting for live then?

I decided to ask the council because I can easily count votes here and
assume it's a more-or-less accurate representation of the community
and choose the more popular option. All this started with some devs
asking me why scm was chosen instead of live and me wanting to avoid
this GLEP being rejected/hated for such a trivial matter.

+1 on that. live ist the more obvious solution.

I don't have a strong preference either way. Live seems logical as that
is what we have been calling them.
