is catatalyst supposed to create a .catalyst_lock in its chroot? because I
keep having catalyst error out saying that file doesn't exist. I'm using
catalyst 2.0

Ignore it. It doesn't hurt anything. It's really just a warning.

Hi to all!
Thanks your help, now i am building my first livecd-stage1..In the meantime i 
was planning to update the doc on wiki with all the things i have learned 
with your help.
I know it's not an official document and all can change it, but i think it's a 
starting point..
What do you think about?

good Idea I was going to look into doing that too. it's currently the only
howto there is. if you aren't planning on finishing it maybe you could add
the "this article is a stub... feel free to expand" at the top

You're free to do what you want.

However, after the 2006.1 release, I will be working on official
documentation to be put up on the catalyst site.  This will include an
updated FAQ, catalyst 2.0 reference guide, and even a revival of the
"catalyst howto" which explains how to do certain things.  Except it to
be something like the "Gentoo Handbook" for catalyst.  The howto won't
be a requirement for 2.0 going stable, but the reference guide will be.

finally someone is writing documentation? for something this year?
<sarcasm>I thought docs were on hold for 06?</sarcasm> know if portage docs
will be updated too? sorry for the sarcasm... I just think some things that
should have been documented weren't. catalyst not necessarily one of those
things although a bit more would have been nice...

If you feel the documentation is lacking, feel free to contribute some. 
Otherwise, stop complaining. All gentoo developers (and documentation writers) 
are volunteers.

I'm a volunteer.  I spend about 40 hours a week working on Gentoo stuff,
besides my normal 40 hour a week job.  You're complaining because what I
volunteer on wasn't done to your satisfaction?  Seriously, keep this
kind of opinion to yourself.  I don't care to hear it, and it doesn't
contribute anything to the conversation.

What did *you* do to help get documentation done?

you mean besides starting the portage 2.1 thread trying to sort out the new
features? and considering updating the wiki for catalyst? volunteering for
user representative at gentoo, and giving presentations frequently at my
local lug? studying school doing my 40 hour a week internship, and I
somewhat aided with other docs in the past, filing bugs to add, update, or
remove sections. So I suppose I've done nothing to help gentoo or the linux
community? no need to get so offended... I applaud the fact that catalyst2
won't be made stable without proper documentation, and a how to is planned.
believe it or not I'm willing to help. but I can't help a project I don't
understand. but I don't like it when software is rolled out as STABLE
without proper documentation and months later it still doesn't have it. I
guess I will have to write it myself question is will it make it into the
tree? I'll see what I can do in the next few weeks to get the portage
utilities man pages in the next few weeks and make an update to the portage
manpage. I'm not coming down on you, and gentoo generally has the best
documentation around, however I notice many new tools (gentoo specific) are
lacking it.

Is it me or does the Catalyst Wiki entry have about as much to do with
the official documentation as what color shorts I have on does? I'm
sorry but people like Chris, Andrew, Eric and many others who develop
projects like Catalyst and Genkernel are doing far more than giving
presentations at a lug. These are people with full time careers and
families that still put in an ungodly amount of time to make Gentoo what
it is. Instead of complaining how about just saying thank you. They have
all helped me a great deal on many occasions and when the opportunity
presents itself I make sure to buy the beer. I guess if that is so hard
to grasp I hear Debian is looking...

sorry guys didn't mean to get you upset. I'm tired... been up all night...
maybe I misphrased something. because I wasn't actually critisizing the
current catalyst docs. I'm just peeved about a lot of things. and the wiki
is really the only catalyst howto at the moment. that I've found. and I'll
buy alec warner a drink the next time he comes to gllug meeting.

Look.  I really don't give a crap what else you've done.  You are
bitching on the CATALYST list about the CATALYST documentation.  So I
simply asked what you've contributed to the documentation.  How about I
give the answer, since I would have been the person you contributed it
to.

That wiki article was just so horribly wrong in so many places. I've made some 
changes and additions to make it a bit less wrong :)

I have not yet changed the old one, i have just focus on the error while 
approching catalyst (like why don't call livecd-stage1 just stage1) :)
