For example, I run catalyst out of a chroot on an Ubuntu machine at work (on a machine that's maintained by a non-Gentoo sysadmin). However, the main catalyst devs are probably running catalyst on native Gentoo systems, which means that there may be a few kinks to work out if you want to go a different route [1]. Since system-building is a fairly resource intensive task, I'd recommend not using a full-blown virtual system unless you have to.
