This should be the last release candidate of catalyst before 2.0 is
made. I plan on leaving 2.0 in package.mask for a few days after I
release it, simply to give people more time to notice the warning
messages that 2.0_rc50 will give. The reason for this is simple. This
is the last version of catalyst that will use a different SLOT for
installing. The final catalyst 2.0 version will completely supersede
catalyst 1.x entirely, and catalyst 1.x will be removed from the tree
once 2.0 goes stable. This also means that I have a good bit of work
ahead of me to get the online documentation fixed before 2.0 goes
stable.

Anyway, I would appreciate it if everyone who has been using catalyst
will test this newer version as soon as possible and report any bugs you
find immediately so I can expedite getting 2.0 to a final state.

Thanks,

Err... honestly, it's too much to explain. The newer catalyst has
*tons* more features. The feature set that came from catalyst 1.x has
been tested quite thoroughly. Only the newer features really need heavy
testing.

For "simple" builds, few changes, if any, were required. For more
complex changes, days or even weeks of work was required to make the
switch. To be honest, I am surprised to hear that *anyone* on this list
is using catalyst 1.x anymore. We haven't added any code to it in over
a year now, including any bug fixes, and have recommended to everyone to
use catalyst 2.x instead.

Maybe it's just, that 1.x is too good to update... :-)

You know, we (as an example) are in the middle of a commercial venture, and we update, when an update is
_required_ , not when it's nice to have...
I guess you know what they say about updates. Updates means new code with new bugs, which require new
bugfixes. 1x is far from perfect, but it works for us...

Ciao,
Andreas

Just don't expect an answer other than "update to 2.x" if you ask a question on
this list or file a bug :)

Well, it is pretty stable. The main thing is it hasn't gotten any
bug-fixes, either. Of course, you've probably also worked out any bugs
that you had with it long ago.

Well, it'll never be "required" since it is open source. However,
"upstream" (as in the catalyst developers) are moving forward and we
will stop offering catalyst 1.x within the next month. While you're
definitely welcome to keep using it, consider this your notice to keep a
local copy of the ebuilds and the distfiles.

Well, catalyst 2.x has definitely had its share. I mean, would we be on
release candidate *50* if it hadn't? ;]

I don't think so. I fully understand, that Chris has to set priorities to get something going.
And I experienced most folks on this list as nice, friendly and helpful (and I had my share of trouble
with Gentoo developers).
So you should always get some help here from somebody...

Back on topic: we wanted to use unionfs for Seniorix somewhere in the future, but if some folks here
would like to use it now for their projects and are willing to contribute something to a Genkernel fix
we could start this now?
I'm not into Genkernel nor python, but I'm willing to contribute my share.
I'd propose to add our results to
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_build_a_LiveCD
, since the author seems to be disappeared.
If someone is interested in a collaboration, let me know...

Ciao,
Andreas

I'm definitely *not* interested in adding anything to a wiki, where is
can easily be screwed up by any passer-by. Much preferred would be
proper documentation on the Gentoo website, where it belongs. I
honestly have this as one of my requirements for catalyst 2.0 going
stable in the tree, so it'll be happening "sometime soon"(tm)... though
most likely after 2006.1 is released.

Since you always have the complete history, nothing is ever lost, no matter what any user
does to the page..

Looking foward to this...

Right.... but we also don't need to be pointing users to a page that at
any point in time could say something like "Andreas is a tool!" in
bright red 72 point font, either... ;]

Having history is one thing, having control over the content is another.
