Hi there,
Tried to install catalyst several times, also with different versions
of optimized built compiler (whole bootstrap) (athlon-xp,none,i686) but
it will display always the same:
!!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?
/etc/make.profile is set correctly and if you export $ARCH these lines
will disappear, but the problem below still exists.

This is a common issue.
You should provide your .spec file but I'm quite sure your profile variable is wrong.
It should be something like this :
profile: default-linux/x86/2005.0
The documentation is there :
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/catalyst/2.x/reference.xml

Yeah, that solved the problem.
Thank you very much for your interest and the fast response.

Visiting the reference (link above) once more, I know why I trapped into
the wrong syntax. The HOWTO it-self uses different values for the
"profile" . Maybe someone should give the writer of that document the
advice, that both syntax doesn't seem to be equal.

profile What system profile Catalyst uses to build the media. It can
take values such as default-x86-2004.0 [that DOESN'T work for me] or
default-linux/x86/2004.0.[that does!]

Actually, both are correct. However, you can't point to a non-existent
profile. The default-x86-2004.0 profile was removed some time ago.
Also, that document has not been updated in a long, long time. I
suggest using the template spec files that are installed when you
install catalyst via USE="doc" rather than the online version. Also,
the online version you are using is for catalyst 2, not catalyst 1.
Right now, they're the same, but in the future, they will change.
The correct link for catalyst 1, which is what you are using, is:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/catalyst/1.x/reference.xml
