I just wanted to know how everybody goes through the process of
determining what files / directories are needed for the livecd to
function properly.

So far I have been doing the good ol' faithful get it working then
remove some stuff and rebuild to see if anything broke. This takes
forever and a day. Does anyone have any pointers on how to make the
resulting iso smaller without going through this pain-staking process?

That's pretty much what I did when creating the very long list from the
livecd-stage2 spec files used to build 2004.3 and 2005.0 releases. I
wish I had a better method, but I don't.

If anyone comes up with one, I'd love to hear about it.
