That is good to know.  We now know that over-optimization in gcc-4 is
the source of the problem (somewhere between -O0 and -O2).  So if you
build the kernel with gcc-4 and

# COPTFLAGS=-O0 make

it should also work.  Joe, if you have time, let me know about how
that works.  Thanks.
