I am getting the following error. I don't want X on my system, it's a
server box, but i do want mono. Perhaps I'm dumb, but from this error
message I can't figure out how to tell it that yes, I want mono, and no,
I don't want X, and yes, I want to update my system. Any advice?

hurricane ~ # emerge --update world --deep --newuse --verbose --pretend

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy
"x11-libs/cairo[X]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/cairo-1.8.6-r1 (Change USE: +X)
(dependency required by "dev-dotnet/libgdiplus-2.0" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "dev-lang/mono-2.0.1-r1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "world" [argument])

First, check if this is possible at all! To do that, try to build
manually (using the tarball of mono in /usr/portage/distfiles) by
following upstream directions on how to do so.

If there's no way to build without X, then Portage can't do anything
about it. If it is possible, then file a bug report about it and
request the "X" USE flag for dev-lang/mono.

dev-dotnet/libgdiplus depends on cairo[X]

to avoid it you can use the "minimal" USE flag on dev-lang/mono that
removes the dependency on libgdiplus.

echo "dev-lang/mono minimal" >> /etc/portage/package.use
