An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere named as
"con".
This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable...
At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why
this happened!

oh yea, just booted my win2000 japanese version on vmware tryed to create
'con' FOLDER but it claimed file name is too short or something,
I donno what english version say

It's an old MS-DOS problem...
They are the name of devices (con, aux, etc)

It says for con:
Cannot create or replace file: The filename you specified is invalid or 
too long.
Specify a different filename.

For aux:
Cannot rename : A file with the name you specified already exists.

The whole list of forbidden names (from memory):
aux (eg ttyS0), prn (eg lp0), com1 to com4, lpt1 to lpt3, con, nul and 
clock$

I have several theories:

(1) they want to forget about DOS, and want us to do the same
(2) command line? What's that? "nothing to see here, move along."
(3) MS programmers may have finally attained that status where they are 
so removed from the inner workings of the OS through higher level 
languages that true OS wizardy is only held by a select few.

The same goes for me... But I really can't believe that nobody at 
Microsoft knows why this is so. Unless Linux-users know more about 
Microsoft's history than Microsoft itself does. ;-)

I'd say it's #3.  Remember, MS is (unfortunately still, tho I wouldn't
object if it were hardware only, or the software were all make GPL
compatible open source) a living corporation, with a non-zero employee
turnover rate, and like any large corporation, is highly departmented,
such that the right hand often doesn't know what the left hand is doing
(and even less, what they did a decade ago).

It's likely that few actually doing the coding now were around for the
days of MSDOS, and while some remember 9x, they coded GUI, not command
line DOS, for it.  While 9x was still DOS based and had a semi-decent DOS
command line, even at that point, it would have been the old veterans
doing the coding for it, while the vast majority including all the new
guys did GUI only.

The worst part of it is that I believe that there are methods that will 
allow you to make a file with such an illegal name (the API is not 
consistent). Of course the file then becomes hard to use or delete ;-).

The interface is consistent, but perhaps not always completely obvious.
 I've run into filenames that look like cmd-line-options from time to
time - they tend to get created from typos.

30 years ago I worked with a stream editor and paper tape. The editor 
wouldn't read a line longer than 80 chars*, but it would happily output one. 
I spent many happy hours with a unipunch blotting out characters until the 
offending line was short enough. Paperless office? Yeah.

* I may have the wrong number here.

Runing c:/con/con on a win9x system will crash it with a  bluescreen. I 
have no idea why microsoft adds such features.
