What version of gentoolkit do you have?  qpkg is deprecated and has been
since at at least gentoolkit 0.2.2-rc1, merged here back on May 27,
according to my logs.  Even if you are using an older version, consider
switching to equery instead, as qpkg hasn't been under development for some
time and may therefore have strange bugs.  I'd say this is probably one
example, tho it's still working sort of correctly for you.
