Hi,
Just wondering if there is a known good ati-drivers package in
portage for linux-2.6.17, either in the kernel.org or gentoo versions.

Thanks,
Mark

No problem with x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati (6.6.1) here. Kernel 2.6.17
(kernel.org vanilla), xorg-7.1, compiled with gcc 4.1.1.

Of course, I don't use slaveryware, so don't use the slaveryware ati
drivers. I haven't read of any kernel issues with them, but last I read,
they didn't have a version for xorg-modular, either 7.0 or 7.1, yet.
That is of course one of the problems with using slaveryware, users are
dependent on the whims of their software master for updates, which often
lag the freedomware versions, if the master deigns to release updates at
all. The Nvidia slaves' master is likewise lagging.

xorg modular has been in for several version of ati-drivers.
You'll need to unmask by keyword the latest drivers in portage. Which
at this time is 8.25.18

I know they work on 2.6.16, however I can't confirm they work on
2.6.17. But I see no reason why they shouldn't.

emerge -av ati-drivers

xorg-server-1.0.* is compatible with up to the latest version of
ati-drivers - I have yet to reboot into 2.6.17 but have heard of no
issues with kernel.
If you are running ~amd64 you will need to to either match Duncan's
open-source piety or mask a few xorg things as there has been an ABI
change in xorg-server which has not been picked up in ati-drivers yet.
My /etc/portage/package.mask includes the following lines ATM:

=x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.0-r1
=x11-base/xorg-x11-7.1
=x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.1.0
=x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse-1.1.1

i have masked these too:

>=x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.6.0
>=x11-drivers/xf86-video-vesa-1.1.0

I couldn't get them to work with xorg 7.1 when I tried a few weeks back:
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
(couldn't get to build for 7.1 - seems hardcoded to 7.0)

but it works with xorg 7.0 and you do get 3d acceleration up to
2560x1600! (assuming you card and monitor support it).
IIRC 6.8 also worked. 6.9 didn't (no GL - not sure why)
AFAIK, the only problem with this driver is the lack of XVideo support.

They do.
