I have started using the athlon cool and quiet facility with cpudyn. However,
ksensors show that the processor speed reduced from 2200 to 10000 during low
activity but the processor temprature remains at 40 degree C.
I was expecting this to reduce. Is this temp normal?
For anybody who has an Athlon 64 3500 - What temps are you showing.

I run an Athlon 64 3400 with cool and queit, my processor slows down to
800MHz while idle and the temp is around 32C. Under full load it gets
to 38C ~ 42C depending on room temperature. IIRC when I first built this
rig, I had a similar problem where the CPU never cooled down. After a
bit of research I determined I may have used too much thermal paste
between the CPU and heat sink. After removing the old paste and
reapplying a very very thin coat my system seems to run cooler. In the
dead of winter I have seen the CPU idle as low as 28C (mind you my
ambient room temp in the winter is about 17C).

It's been a funky night, and I'm about to anounce myself to this list because
it's new for me, and....
this not having anything to do with you at all, I think this list has been
full of B.S. lately and hard to join
I'm running an amd64 3500 at 2.2ghz and I don't think I compiled my kernel
with support for temperature.
If your compiles aren't failing and sed/gcc or anything that deals with
floating point numbers isn't failing, you're not too hot or too overclocked
or, as my dumb donkey thinks, not overclocked enough.

That's not quite true Jason. You can have a chip running hot enough
it's introducing errors into the computations but not crashing apps.
Try a Prime95 torture test and see what I mean. It calculates Mersenne
Primes and under the torture test trys to recompute a number of
mersenne primes. Because it's testing against a known good value, it's
able to detect if any of the math calculations are unstable due to
heat.
And yes I do overclock. :P Running an Athlon XPm 2500+ @ 2.5GHz(stock:
1.8GHz). Temps never crack 40c on air cooling and the rig is rock
solid.

My (also three years old) dual Opteron 242 system runs ~55-59 C, regardless
of whether I'm doing a load 10+ set of parallel emerges, or it's running
the typical idle xorg/kde 5-10% one CPU, not registering anything on the
other.
My lm-sensors graphs in ksysguard are all three (two CPUs and system temp)
ranged 47-68 C, and all three including systemp normally register in that
range, CPU temps as I said 55-59, system temp 48-53.
I can also mention that while I have AC, I'm in a really rather poorly
insulated residence in Phoenix, AZ, where summer exterior temps (shaded)
regularly exceed 46 C (115 F) and it can be hot enough to run the AC on
warm days even in mid-winter. The computer is next to an unshaded eastern
facing external wall that gets decently warm to the touch. Despite that,
computer temps remain stable.
Finally, I'm running a quad-drive SATA RAID installation, and four sticks
of pc3200 RAM, which will contribute to the heat.
Fans? In the BIOS, I have the system set for 30% fan-speed at 50 C to 100%
@ 70 C. The (triple fan) power supply fans are auto-speed-regulated as
well. Other than the power supply fans, I have a 6" intake fan (fixed
speed) and two 3" exhaust fans (variable speed). All the fans seem to stay
at the low end of their speed/noise range and seldom if ever increase
noticeably in noise, either, even at full 10+ load average and 100% both
CPUs in mid-summer, so the system appears to be relatively thermally
stable. My AC is normally set @ about 27 C (80 F). If I let ambient-room
increase to 30 C, 86 F, system and CPU temps rise by a similar amount, to
59-62 C.
A couple summers ago, I had my AC go out. The hard drive overheated and
developed some bad sectors, but the CPUs didn't seem to be affected --
they apparently triggered thermal shutdown and were fine. As I had
duplicated partitions on the hard drive, after getting a new AC and
restabilizing temps, it was stable on other than the damaged sectors.
However, I expedited my disk upgrades as I was afraid it wouldn't remain
that way, with the result being the switch to RAID. I run Linux kernel
RAID, RAID-1 for /boot (as that's required for /boot since GRUB doesn't
understand other than RAID-1), RAID-6, so I can lose any two of the four
drives without issue, for my main system, and RAID-0 for temporary or
redownloadable stuff like the portage tree and distfiles, kernel sources,
and ccache. I also switched from 1 year warrantee WD and Maxtor drives
(Maxtor that time, I'd had a WD go out the year before, heat related or
not I'm not sure) to 5-yr warrantee Seagates. I'd never had a drive go
out until they hit 100 gig, but the 100 gig WD and the 250 gig Maxtor
going out each after about a year was enough to decide I needed something
better, and the quad 300-gig Seagate SATAs have been great for just over a
year now, so here's hoping...
So anyway, I've had more problems with drives overheating than CPUs.
That's the take-away.

I have a socket 939 3500+. It's in a large tower case with 5 case fans, and it has a GeForce 7800 right under it.
At full load/full speed for several hours, I've never seen it go over 157F (mumble mumble 70C). (Room temp ~80F)
At no load/1GHz, I've seen it as low as 90F(32C). (Room temp ~60F)
Right now, it's right around 110F(43C) in a ~75F room. I try to keep my room temp around 70, and my usual no load temp is right around the 108F mark, and the usual sustained full load temp is around 150F.
The temps you are getting look pretty reasonable.

It could be the motherboard sensors aren't working correctly or that the
wrong weighting is being used. And it could be the air flow in the case
is improper - perhaps a loop where it's taking in pre-heated exhaust air.
Or it could be a fan is reversed - pulling in air when it should be exhausting
air.
Or, it simply could be the location of the case.

It's more important to monitor fans than temps. A dead fan is more destructive
than running slightly high temps.
