This is a bit off-topic, but it's something the fine people on this
list are likely to have experience with...
I have recently set up (or tried to) a home network. There's an AMD64
desktop running Gentoo and a recently purchased HP nx6310 laptop
running Windoze XP, and they are supposed to be linked via a D-Link
wireless router.
Both machines can access the Internet, but at first I just couldn't
get them to see /each other/ on the home network. All ping packets
from one to the other were lost. I solved part of the problem by
disabling the laptop's built-in Norton Internet Security firewall -
when I do this, the desktop can see the laptop, but the laptop /still/
can't ping the desktop.
The problem seems to be solely with the laptop - so, do any of the
list's members with experience in putting Linux and Windows machines
on the same network have some advice?

Yeah I can probably help. I have 13 machines at home and a couple of
them are windows boxes (for games only). My guess is that the Norton
Firewall might be off, but the Windows Firewall might not be. I will be
glad to offer help off list. A look at your network IP ranges, etc
would be helpful too.

the "ping" program on windoze could be blocked by the firewall you are
using..
check if that's not the case.

I have a Gentoo AMD64 laptop and have plugged into many networks in my time....
Ping is not a totally reliable method of discovering machines /
testing networks as it is blocked by a LOT of firewalls. Try using
nmap, or even running iTunes on the windows box and trying to find the
DAAP server it runs when you share the music. The avahi network
browser will help with that.
