I have a Gentoo AMD64 laptop and have plugged into many networks in my time....
Ping is not a totally reliable method of discovering machines /
testing networks as it is blocked by a LOT of firewalls. Try using
nmap, or even running iTunes on the windows box and trying to find the
DAAP server it runs when you share the music. The avahi network
browser will help with that.
