Hi,
I'm just wondering about how well beryl from portage works on AMD64
right now. I run Gnome. Beryl looks like fun but does it provide any
advantages over running whatever comes with Gnome? (metacity?)
Thanks,
Mark

It runs fine on my system. I have an NVIDIA card and run it with AIGLX to
avoid the black window bug.
The only advantage is it looks pretty. There's no real benefit to using it.

Thanks David.
I notice that many/most folks who have talked about it seem to run
NVidia. I have an ATI. Any reason you know why it won't run, or won't
run well, on ATI? I'm using the ATI driver form the kernel. Does its
lack of 3D acceleration rule out beryl?
Thanks,
Mark

I haven't personally tried it but there are a few threads on the forums that
say it's possible. It will likely be slower than fglrx but give it a shot.
This thread should give you pointers.

It's just way easier if you have an NVIDIA Card. The ~amd64 Nvidia Drivers
bring the right features with them, so you don't need any changes in your X
System. With nvidia its just two lines in Xorg.conf and an "emerge beryl",
and it works.

I don't think this should be a problem.

Hi,
I tried it, but it doesn't work for me.
So I using beryl with the closed-source ATI-driver and Xgl.
Take a look at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL

I'm running Beryl on an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. I installed with
Sabayon and with a little tweaking I got it running. Look on the
Sabayon forums for it.

Care to enlighten me on which two lines? I already use the amd64 Nvidia
drivers.

Not quite, to get beryl to build I had to add these to my

There is a pretty large ATI community over at Sabayon
(http://www.sabayonlinux.org) most have given up on XGL there, it seems, and
moved over to AIGLX - I'm on nVidia myself, and for me it is mostly stable.
There's a Wiki and an active Forum with a useful Tutorial section, almost
all tech stuff ends up pointing back at Gentoo, so you shouldn't have to
expect any Paradigm Changes!
