[gentoo-amd64] Compaq Presario V6420US

I decided to join the laptop club and bought a Compaq Presario
V6420US.

Call me ancient but I´ve never had wireless ethernet before so it´s new
to me.  I can´t seem to get it working.  Initially I tried using
ndiswrapper but compaq.com gives me file not found for the XP drivers.

Then I tried (as I did not know it existed before) using the Broadcom
drivers in the linux kernel.  This fails too with no access points
found.  dmesg reveals bcm43xx: FATAL ERROR: BCM43xx_IRQ_XMIT_ERROR.

The laptop has a wired ethernet port which works without any harassment
at all.  But it´s a laptop... I don´t want to be plugged into anything.

Searching google reveals that some ubuntu user got it working so I know
it´s possible.  I just don´t know what man page I need to read or what
documentation I´m missing.  If anyone has a clue I´d be appreciative.

what bmc board do you have? try a lspci and tell us what board you have.
some bcm boards do work fine with their native linux driver.

I have a HP dv6000 - they're not the same but they look pretty darn
similar. I had a very hard time getting the kernel bcm43xx drivers to
work - and when they did they didn't work very well (short range was the
biggest issue for some reason). I ended up using ndiswrapper. This took
me a while to get going as well though, when I used the drivers from the
Windows Vista (64bit) install that came with it they didn't work. I
ended up finding some one the net, if you want to try it I've uploaded
the .inf to http://rapidshare.com/files/67451529/bcmwl5.inf.html

Make sure you have all the kernel options for bcm43xx disabled if you go
 the way of ndiswrapper, and make sure you still have all the wireless
options you'll need. Then just ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf; modprobe
ndiswrapper, and go from there.

Getting ndiswrapper to work with wpa_supplicant also kinda threw me, in
/etc/conf.d/net had:
wpa_supplicant_eth1="-Dndiswrapper
- -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"

but needed:
wpa_supplicant_eth1="-Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"

do you have a bcm43xx chipset supported? from what you've said it seems that
you have the 4318 chip, which is one the most horrible and bugged broadcom
chips. i ended up buying another wireless card for 17€ based on an atheros
chipshet and now i have a great experience with it. i also have all my
settings set by networkmanager.

I just didn't have very good luck with the kernel drivers. So far I've
had no problems with ndiswrapper, so I'll prolly stick with this unless
I get the urge to really play around with the kernel drivers again (who
knows, winter is coming!).

I also have an atheros-based card in my router which works wonderfully,
too bad broadcom isn't as linux friendly!

Getting the presario 6000 to work is a pain. ACPI is horrible, I've
heard of issues with sound, and the wireless can be a pain. Right now
I'm using ndiswrapper with whatever drivers are on that Ubuntu Forum
page. There's a huge forum post on Ubuntu about getting this laptop
working, you might want to check it out. I don't have time to look it
up right now, but if you find it and you've been using Linux for a
while you can probably figure most of it out. Just remember that if
you you're ndiswrapper doesn't work at all, you need to do ndiswrapper
-m && ndiswrapper -ma and a couple of other things I think. The other
thing is that if you don't know if the driver is correct, do
ndiswrapper -l and it should say "device present". One more thing, the
driver you're looking for is called "bcmwl5.inf" and "bcmwl5.sys".
There is another driver for this card called bcmwl6.inf, and I've had
no luck with it. I'll try to give you the file if I get a chance.

4311 PCI-E Supported for kernel 2.6.20.6 and laterthis is from the official
bcm43xx supported devices.
so the steps that you have to do to make it work is:
1. download a kernel >= 2.6.20.6 (the 2.6.23 is the latest and i recommend
it since it's good on my laptop)
2. go to /usr/src/linux and do a make menuconfig

the second is fundamental and also the MAC add-on to the IEEE 802.11 is.
then go up two times and go to "Device drivers->Network device
support->Wireless LAN" and select:

then, exit, save the new kernel config, and do a make && make
modules_install && make install && emerge ati-drivers (or nvidia-drivers)
truecrypt (and whatever modules you've compiled from portage. they need to
be reinstalled for the new kernel)
this will rebuild kernel, rebuild the modules compiled with portage. then
you have to download the firmware (wlapsta.o version 3
http://svit.epfl.ch/stuff/wl_apsta.o ) and then install the bcm43xx-fwcutter
(the package is in portage).
go to the directory where you've downloaded the wl_apsta.o and do a
bcm43xx-fwcutter wl_apsta.o and then mv *.fw /lib/firmware && chmod +r+x
/lib/firmware/*.fw
now all that is left to do is reboot and have the kernel load the bcm43xx
module and make the wireless work.
