[gentoo-amd64] firefox-bin crashing a few times every day

Hi,
   I'm wondering if anyone else is suffering the problems I am with
firefox-bin crashing a few times every day. It seems to be more or
less repeatable. After logging into Gnome for the first time if I have
two tabs and attempt to drag one tab to a different location then it
crashes. Not every time, but often. When I start firefox-bin a second
time it recognizes that it crashed, restarts the previous session, and
at this point it doesn't crash if I drag tabs around.

   I have also had this happen multiple times hitting an Attach File
button in GMail.

   I will say that this seems to have started roughly after the last
time I wrote to the list asking about Java & Flash support. I changed
a number of things at that time & I can go back and look them up if
folks think it's really involved. However this seems a strange thing
to blame on Java or Flash. That work is still in .bash_history so I
can at least get a rough idea of what I was doing if it seems
important.

   There is little to configure for firefox-bin itself. I've attached
the emerge command for reference.

   I've tried running firefox-bin in a terminal but I don't get any
info. I should probably learn how to use something like gdb but I'm
resistant.

   Anyway, I'm mainly looking for ideas about what to consider looking
at to fix this. It's getting frustrating. It crashed 4 times
yesterday.

It also happens to me many times, only with the 32bit versión in my 64bit
machine.

In my case, it's random, when entering diferents websites, at diferent
times, with diferent actions, some days 10 ten times, some weeks never and
so on.

Yes, sounds very much like my problems. Mostly it's pretty random.
Clicking on some random link on random web sites can set it off. All
sort of little things make it happen. The only semi-consistent thing
I've found that's sort of repeatable from day to day is the
rearranging of tabs. That will almost always make it happen after
logging in the first time of the day.

try setting off java, clear everything from cache to cookies of passwords,
disable addons and the restart it and see if it crashes. if it doesn't for
some time enable one add-on per time and try it out for some time. if it
doesn't crashes then add another addon.
the last thing is to see if you have the x86 emuls installed if you are on
64bit arch (java,sound,base,xorg) then see if you have the plugins compiled
for 32 bit (you should have it that way since they are available on 32bit
except mplayer). another thing is to have the last stable version of gtk+.
that should fix the issues.
if that doesn't work either try also compiling the mozilla-firefox package
(and start it via firefox and not firefox-bin). if that's stable with the
same .mozilla directory then there's something wrong in the firefox-bin
package.
i'd suggest you install ccache before compiling if you don't yet use it and
to add the option --buildpkg to emerge, so that you can have the firefox
package built for your particular system. this is useful also for long time
compiling packages as gtk+,qt or kdelibs and kdebase. if you'd later need to
reinstall them (for example the expat-2 update) you can install them in a
matter of little time. just be aware that the packaging requires additional
disk space to package the files once they're compiled.
i didn't experience crashes in the last 6 months.

I have FEATURES=ccache and buildpkg both on, so no need to add the emerge 
parameter, but yes, I've been doing this for some time, and seriously 
recommend it (particularly the buildpkg part, ccache is covered in the 
handbook reasonably well already) myself.

Beso,
   I'll spend some time finding Gentoo manuals to see if I can figure
out what you're talking about. It sounds like great stuff but probably
way above my skill set. It may take some time.

Hi all,
   I wrote to the list a couple of weeks ago about Firefox continually
crashing and got this detailed list of things I might try to see if I
could find a fix. As I'm not a sys admin or a programmer the list
scared me off a bit. However  I've had a very bad week of Firefox
crashing many times every day so I really need to try and find a
solution. This is the best set of ideas I've seen so far so I'm going
to try to do some of it today.

   Again, for review, Firefox started crashing multiple times a day
sometime after I tried to make sure I had Java and Flash working.

   I'd like to ask some questions about the ideas that were given.
Please keep in mind that primarily I am using firefox-bin.

1) How do I turn java and/or java-script off for firefox-bin? Is it
just the setting in the Preferences panel?

2) With respect to using Java in 64-bit Gentoo I am unsure of how to
configure my machine. If the OS is 64 bit but Firefox is 32-bit then
what is the correct setting?

With respect to the browser plugins I see this:

As for the ccache idea I really like the idea of keeping packages
around but not sure how I would use them correctly. For now I'll just
keep building stuff and see if I Can figure that out in parallel.

if user hasn't a java-vm it will use the system one.

With respect to the browser plugins I see this:

they're ok, since there's no 64bit java-nsplugin. with firefox-bin you would

ccache is needed to reduce  the compilation time of packages. the portage
feature to package is another thing.

the system configs are normal too.... the only thing that i can advise you
to do is try the mozilla-firefox instead of mozilla-firefox-bin. don't
uninstall the bin since it can coexhist with the non bin package.... try
that (some hours of compilation) and see what it does.

Humm....mozilla-firefox hasn't been much of an option for me in the
past. Too many problems with web-based media not playing without all
the wincodecs stuff. Maybe this has improved? I've used firefox-bin
really to get Flash, Java and wincodecs. I don't care which one I use.
I just want a good user experience when I'm browsing around and run
into something interesting.

I really only run the AMD64 version of Gentoo because a few years ago
when I bought this system it seemed like an interesting thing to try
out and at the time I had a Linux laptop running 32-bit Gentoo in case
I ran into problems. Then a guy on the web found me and wanted to buy
my 2 year old laptop for more than I paid for it (he wanted a backup
machine) so I sold it and no longer have that backup.

As an everyday, normal desktop user-type I really don't know that
running 64bit Gentoo offers me any advantages and has shown to have
significant disadvantages, at least the way I build the comparison
list. I wonder in what usage model do people here see a measurable
advantage running 64-bit over 32-bit Gentoo?

I've stuck with it for a long time, and I hate to give up, but maybe
it's time to just pack it in and rebuild the machine.

it depends. for example i like to have the software that runs on my machine
to use all of its capabilities.

for win32codecs you just have to emerge the win32codecs and you've done.
there's really no other real thing to do.
for the mediaplayer plugin install mplayer + mplayer-plugin and you'll have
firefox run it without issues. mplayer is also useful for some videos that
xine plays in the wrong way (mainly h264 with ac3 that has some issues with
the subtitles and mplayer doesn't).
install mozilla-firefox (not bin).
as for java and firefox: install emul-linux-java (that you already have)
for flash and firefox: install netscape-flash and nspluginwrapper and then
do:
nspluginwrapper -v -i /usr/lib32/nsbrowser/plugins/libflashplayer.so

restart your mozilla-firefox (not the bin version). and you should be able
to run flash, java, mediaplayer plugins on firefox amd64.
if you still have problems just ask.

The only time I've had firefox-bin crashing a lot was when I was using
the blackdown java plugin. Here's what I did...
I downloaded the latest java jre from sun and put it in /usr/local.
I made it executable. ( "cd /usr/local" and "chmod +x sun-jdk-version-blah")
I then ran the file "./sun-jdk-version-blah"
It created a new directory which I then renamed "java"
"mv sun-jdk-version-blah java"
Then I point a symlink from the mozilla plugins directory (which I had
to make)
"cd /home/yourname/.mozilla"
"mkdir plugins"
"cd plugins"
"ln -s /usr/local/java/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ."

Then kick back and enjoy the java goodness.

OK, I'm doing a little catch up on system maintenance. I did an emerge
-DuN mozilla-firefox and picked up a few new updates. I did a
revdep-rebuild on some libraries and it looks like I'm ready to roll
with Firefox itself.

do you have started mozilla-firefox or mozilla-firefox-bin?! the compiled
mozilla-firefox starts with mozilla-firefox while the 32bit precompiled with
mozilla-firefox-bin. use the lauch or the console to start the compiled
version. after starting they both have the same process name (firefox-bin)
and cannot be used at the same time in the same userspace.
recompile firefox with a language option. i don't see any language
compiled.... try setting this into make.conf:

LINGUAS="en en_GB en_US xxxx" where xxxx is your localization and then
rebuild firefox. the linguas will then build all the future packages that
build localization for your system. (it may not be needed but it's good to
have a system localized and stripped of other useless linguas.)
if it says it needs flash8 then flash9 is not loaded as an extension. see
the nspluginwrapper part to add the extension. maybe you could have to
manually link the the plugin into the mozilla directory plugins if
nspluginwrapper cannot do it.
after that you restart firefox and try youtube. if it makes you see the
videos then java and flash are working. if you miss the audio then recompile
the emul-x86 of alsa.

I've not done anything yet. Here is what was in make.conf when I posted earlier:

However when I look at the options in emerge I don't see en or en_US as options:

well, normally packages are compiled with en,en_US or en_GB. adding all of
them sets the programs to install at least one of them by default. if you
need en_US, then add only that, so your linguas should remain only en and
en_US. if it's not read then there's no problem. so i think that it's not a
real need to rebuild anything. just leave there the linguas and build only
new packages with that languages when they came out. since it does nothing
particular not having it installed for that particular language. also i
think that rebuilding a lot of packages just to add en_US and loosing time
doing that it's not good.
so, just add en_US and then build with that flags just the updated packages
that will hit portage in the future.

so try fixing the nspluginwrapper (if you need help search nspluginwrapper
on http://gentoo-wiki.com/) and if the base install command doesn't work
then do a symlink to the plugin in the mozilla directory.

   Indeed, somewhere along the way Beso suggested removing things to
look for what might be causing the crash. nspluginwrapper was one I
had removed. I reinstalled it and now going to the video.yahoo.com
page doesn't cause a warning anymore. However when I try to play any
video I see the first couple of frames and then I see a gray box drawn
over the top. Audio continues as the video plays but I no longer see
any video.

   Lest I sound like I'm complaining I do think we're making progress.
I rebooted the machine and started the 64-bit browser. Always before
if I created a second tab and tried to rearrange tabs the browser
crashed. It no longer does that. (Maybe simply because I;m using the
64-bit version. I don't know...)

   I wonder if I should be deleting the .mozilla directory to properly
test this stuff?

Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible
npwrapper.nphelix.so
remove helix and use xine in its place for the apps that are using it. also
remove all real player apps, and build win32codecs with real flag, and then
install the mplayerplug-in. you cannot use helix-real with
firefox-64>1.5versions for what i know.
as for flash, sometimes it breaks and you need to restart firefox. the right
way to use flash on 64bit is to have that tab the only one that is accessing
internet from the browser, that flash has unlimited disk space and that you
don't use intesively your disk. if you happen to see a blank screen reload
the page. when you see a white page without the video then flash has broken
and you need to restart firefox. this happens usually after 30-40mins of
flash using, or after 2 hours of firefox open (also no flash use) or also
just after starting firefox. this is a little unpredictable, for what i've
experienced.
as for the .mozilla dir, clear everything with ctrl+shift+del, then save
your bookmarks and settings and delete the .mozilla dir. after that you
restart firefox and it should work well.
now i can figure out a little about why the bin failed: it had 32bit and
64bit plugins (the vlc and maybe mplayerplug-in) which broke it. if you want
to use firefox 32 bit, then compile mplayer, mplayer plugin for 32bit and
remove vlc from the plugins for 32bit.
as for java, i'll document a little, and try to see what i'm missing too,
since i cannot see the java plugin installed.

i'll try symlinking it in the plugin dir and see what happens. i'll let you
know what happens.

there is the one in /usr. i just have to search for it and fix it.

This may be something stranded but even the data in about:plugins is
somewhat suspect.

Maybe that July 26th date was from when something was built off of
this machine. I'm not sure.

I've removed realplayer. I need to search out exactly what you meant
by using xine inside my browser. I don't see an nsplugin for xine.

I'm a little worried that my machine here might need some looking
after in terms of getting up to date. I'm going to give the current
use flags a once over and then do an emerge -DuN world to make sure
everything is more or less consistent with what the Gentoo devs would
expect. I'll look at the wiki's and see if I can find a good AMD64
wiki that addresses all this stuff in parallel. If you get a chance to
clarify any of this then thanks in advance!

I think that you have now gotten Firefox to connect to a Flash plug-in; 
however the plugin has a problem.
Suggestion:
Visit 
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/static/Linux/ShockwaveFlash/English.html
and download Option 1, the tar.gz file
extract libflashplayer.so from the downloaded file and place it in 
/opt/netscape/plugins ( in other words, create 
/opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so )
then run
nspluginwrapper -i /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so
This should produce a nice new up to date  file:
/usr/lib64/nsbrowser/plugins/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
for firefox to use.
This is based on how i got flash to work in 64 bit firefox (including at 
video.yahoo.com).

Btw my experience with helix/realplayer has been more positive than Beso's. 
I emerged realplayer and the nspluginwrapper in sequence followed by the 
flash steps above and all went well.

My only real player complaint is not bewing able to get full screen.
May be related to not doing a java plugin.

Compiling mozilla-firefox and using nspluginwrapper fixed all of the 
crashes I had when clicking on a link in Flash using mozilla-firefox-bin.

i myself don't have that file but flash works well. i do have nsplugin
installed.
i'm pretty stranded that i don't see the java inside there. it should be
since i can use java apps.

win32codecs, mplayer and mplayerplug-in?

OK, it seems that sometimes FLash is working on my system. It never
works on Yahoo but sometimes works on YouTube. I think it may fail on
YouTube after going to Yahoo, but not sure yet.

I'm thinking that for win32codecs the quicktime use flag isn't
supported in the version from portage, but I'm not sure what the
(-quicktime%) indication really means. Does that mean the quicktime
falg has been 'recently removed' from win32codecs?

A major key point the second  reference makes, which can be confirmed at the 
Sun web site, -- There is no java plugin for 64 bit mozilla browsers. 
Unfortunately nspluginwrapper cannot handle java 32 bit plugins.
So--
You can run the Konqueror browser which does not need a plugin but uses the 
java virtual machine directly.
You can use mozilla-firefox-bin with emul-linux-x86-java as the java plugin.

Konqueror worked on your analyze site some months ago; being a gnome I have 
not retried more recently.
I did emerge mozilla-firefox-bin followed by emerging emul-linux-x86-java. 
Automagically firefox-bin picked up helix(real player), flash, and java 
plugins. The first two plugins were on board from the actions described 
earlier which used nspluginwrapper to install them in 64 bit firefox. 
Firefox-bin displays jsp pages at www.prophet.net very well.

Were I in your shoes I would do the updating, probably including kernel, 
unmerge browsers and plugins, do the java references above, emerge 
firefox-bin,  emul-linux-x86-java, realplayer, netscape-flash. Check 
operation of firefox-bin. If flash failed to load up or fails to work, 
unmerge it, and use the direct download and manual install method discussed 
on the download site.

Interesting.  I'm running swfdec (freedomware flash, was in the Sunrise 
overlay, don't know if it still is or if it moved into the main tree by 
now) on 64-bit firefox here.  Of course, it's not a full latest version 
implementation yet, but it does work on YouTube, which uses an older 
flash version, and I've been enjoying catching up on what everyone else 
has been raving about for awhile.

The thing is, apparently there's some sort of timing issue with the way 
the youtube pages load, as sometimes they detect swfdec as flash, 
sometimes they don't, but when they don't, I can reload the page and they 
usually do.  If not, I reload again...

So it's interesting that someone running real flash seems to be 
experiencing somewhat similar issues.  If it's the same thing, then it's 
not particularly that it doesn't work after Yahoo, but that sometimes the 
pages detect it and sometimes they don't.  Why, I haven't delved into, 
but that seems to be the case.  Try refreshing the page a few times, and 
if it's the same problem I've had on youtube with swfdec, it'll detect 
the flash somewhat over 50% of the time, probably ~60-75% of the time, or 
at least that's been my experience here.

I see it's actually (-quicktime%*).  The negative parenthesis/percent can 
indicate a masked flag as well, but the asterisk indicates a recent 
change.  Thus, it's indicating either that it was recently masked 
(unlikely) or that your current version has the flag, but the new version 
you'd be merging no longer has the quicktime flag.  If it's something you 
care about, that's when you do an emerge --pretend --changelog 
win32codecs and see if the flag change is mentioned in the changelog.  
Often, it will be.  (Occasionally portage's --changelog functionality 
won't work, and you'll have to manually view the changelog at, for this 
package, $PORTDIR/media-libs/win32codecs/Changelog, opening it in an 
editor or catting it to the screen or whatever.)

I'm still not having too much trouble with YouTube. I'm having a
number of problems on Yahoo:

a) Almost all videos that don't resize to a larger display window
automatically play but paint a gray box over the top. Audio is fine.

b) I often see stranded 'npviewer.bin' processes left over in top.

c) I sometimes see stranded mplayer processes left over in top.

d) Yahoo searches for different video types so I tried each one out at
least once. Varied results. I searched out the Daily Show and then
tried the first one for each type that I could actually find. I'm not
asking anyone to explain any of this. Just posting the link for anyone
who would like to see how consistent the results might be.

As you can see below my results are not so good. I will use the same
links on my wife's Gentoo 32-bit machine and see how she does with
this.

i) AVI - Works.
