Did you create an account with them, get a password, and then log in
to start an online trading session using their web-based stock trading
platform? It's not until I do that that I have any problems.

Their whole platform is built on Java. I run their stand-alone
application version on Windows Vista. I've run it on OS X. I've tried
to run the stand-alone Linux application on Gentoo, both 32-bit &
64-bit, but couldn't get it to install. (Maybe 6 months ago? Maybe
longer.)

Anyway, the whole trading platform is Java based but you won't get to
the real meat of the problem until you create an account (free to
create) and then run the full blown program.

I'll keep looking into this.

Sure, even java  - I still have blackdown installed, which had a plugin (I remember, how two 
years ago I would go for 64 bit firefox if I need to see site with java, and for 32-bit - if I need 
flash).  But is there point to bother ? I have couple of 32-bit applications, like openoffice, 
anyway.

I may need to install Blackdown along with Sun. My first significant
use of Java now that I have this working was not so good. The Java
frame didn't draw the stock charts (or anything else) and then Firefox
completely hung and had to be killed. I tried the web site (
http://www.thinkorswim.com ) a couple of times and got the same bad
results.

Now that I have it working it seems to me that it will be easier to
maybe find a version that does work, assuming there is one.

I have to try this on 32-bit Linux also to see if it's a Java thing or
an AMD64 thing.

HI Dmitri,
   That's essentially where I thought I was when I started this
thread. Mainly I use firefox-bin, currently version 2.0.0.6. Flash
seems to work fine. Yahoo Video as a test site, other places also.
Everything seems OK. good so far.

   As per what I think I've pieced together from this thread and the
forum link Bjorn point me toward I've done the following:

1) Unmasked the nsplugin flag for sun-jdk.

2) Unmasked sun-jdk

It has been a long time since I've looked at Java on my AMD64 machine.
I run into links, etc., and they don't work. It was frustrating two
years ago. It just didn't work. On my machine still it doesn't, but
maybe this is because I haven't tried to fix it in a long time, so...

Currently there is only a 64 bit java browserplugin in the blackdown
package, and this is unstable! If you want java support in for example
firefox, than you have to use the firefox-bin package (32bit).

To see the available java plugins:

	eselect java-nsplugin list

and here is the thread, why the 64bit java plugin is not in the obove list:
	http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-552110.html

To use the unstable 64bit blackdown java plugin, you have to link the
libjavaplugin_oji.so manually.

OK, I am busy working so I'll have to read the whole thread later,
maybe tonight. However both the forum thread and your response do
bring up some questions. Thanks!

I have both firefox and firefox-bin installed. Both tell me that the
JRE isn't installed. Using your eselect command it appears that I
don't have a plugin. Am I correct? I Assume I'd see a name under one
of those headings?

Indeed, it appears that nsplugin isn't enabled which would be my first
issue to solve. I know I had it turned off at one point when I was
using a chroot to get around this problem but that's far too difficult
to live with on a day-in/day-out basis.

Anyway, how do I get it built to be similar to Volker's sun-jdk-1.6
setup. I cannot seem to get the flag enabled:

lightning ~ # emerge -pvDuN sun-jdk

Really I need to go look for a Wiki page for doing this on 64-bit
Gentoo . This machine has been running 64-bit for at least 2 years and
this hasn't been important up until now so I'm in need of a solution
that is really equivalent to what my wife and son have on their 32-bit
Gentoo machines.

For a 32-bit plugin must I run a 32-bit version of Firefox? (I.e. - I
guess firefox-bin, correct?)

If the answer is yes then, if you know, what is the process of getting
Flash running in the same browser? Any problems? There used to be
IIRC.

Basically, can any browser, preferably Firefox, be made functionally
equivalent in terms of all web-based multimedia (Java, Flash, playing
audio and video files, etc.) with the same browser running on Gentoo
32-bit?

But if you are comfortable in using conqueror, there is another possibility. 
Because as far as I know, konqueror uses the java-vm directly (no plugin). So 
you can use the 64bit sun-jdk/jre without any problem.
