[gentoo-amd64] I don't want mplayer-bin to play vmw files!

I have a amd64 machine, with a 64-bit installation. And I HATE mplayer. 
I don't want to use it to play movies, but for the wmv and other formats 
only supported by win32codecs, I have no options. There's only the 32 
bit version of mplayer available, and only a 32 bit player can use 
win32codecs.

Can I compile some other player (like Totem, Kaffeine, Xine) as 32 bit? 
If not, how can I install any 32 bit player other than mplayer?

I don't know if Gentoo offers anything, but failing that, you can always 
just download a 32-bit binary of xine and a player based on it, and use 
that. Ought to work without problems.

I tried that, but I doesn't work, because some 32 bit libraries are not

The app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-* packages contain some of the 32 bit 
libraries. Did you investigate if the missing libraries are contained in any 
of those?

You might consider a 32-bit chroot. I use one for web sites that are
picky about Flash, Java, win32codec support, etc.

Okay, that will surely work. But a 32-chroot (I never did that) doesn't 
require (basically) a new gentoo installation? I think that's too much 
work, isn't it?

Too much is a value judgement. You'll have to decide on that.

Yes, it is a lot of work at least to set up. It is a complete, more or
less, second install. It takes up disk space and I find it VERY
confusing when I'm looking at what's mounted where since the Gentoo
chroot guide intermingles the two a bit. If you use Gnome or KDE you
do not have to install those. Install something like fluxbox which is
enough to satisfy dependencies and allows X apps to make forward
progress.

That said I do not update my chroot very often so it's not that bad to maintain.

Again, you asked so I responded. I'm not pushing the idea. Just
putting it out there.
