When will FF 3.5 be in portage? I've seen the ebuild, but haven't found
it on the mirrors yet. I don't care if it's masked, I want to try it and
help debug if necessary.

Then install ff3.5_rc3 (and it's masked/keyworded deps) from the mozilla
overlay <http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/mozilla> to help test.
I had some issues with xulrunner-1.9.1_rc2, but _rc3 fixes them, and I
built 3.5_rc3 earlier w/o problems.

Okay, I've sync'd portage twice the last two days and don't see it. Is
it hard masked for ~amd64? Or am I just hitting screwy mirrors?

It is masked by package.mask and ~amd64

It's hard masked.
package.mask in profile-dir says:
# Nirbheek Chauhan <nirbheek@gentoo.org> (24 Jun 2009)
# Firefox Release Candidates
# nspr-4.8 has soname bump
=www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.5*
=net-libs/xulrunner-1.9.1*
=dev-libs/nspr-4.8*
On my ~amd64-setup here all runs and compiles fine, but naturaly I can
only speek for a limited number of ebuilds and progs.

I've commented the lines on my system and successfully built it.
However I had to revdep-rebuild afterwards as suggested ....

I hope by "I've commented the lines" you mean that you unmasked it via
/etc/portace/package.unmask
If not the next sync overrides your comments and firefox 3.5 gets masked
again.

I don't see it either, as "www-client/mozilla-firefox":

[MN] www-client/mozilla-firefox-bin (3.5): Firefox Web Browser
[ N] www-client/mozilla-launcher (1.59): Script that launches mozilla or
firefox
[MN] www-plugins/mozilla-weave (0.3.2): Mozilla Labs prototype for
online services into Firefox
[ N] x11-plugins/noscript (1.9.0.4): Firefox plugin to disable javascript
So the 32-bit prebuilt binary-only x86 version is there as
www-client/mozilla-firefox-bin, but the from-source version apparently
hasn't hit the tree yet (as of when I last synced a few hours ago),
masked or unmasked.
I'm guessing there's some problems with the build they're trying to fix.
Let's see what gentoo bugzilla has to say...
Hmm... seems it's in the mozilla overlay, but not yet in the tree, here's
the buglist URL (watch the wrap):
http://bugs.gentoo.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=ALL+www-client%2Fmozilla-
firefox-3.5
Not too many bugs listed, yet. Whatever's keeping it out of the tree
probably isn't bugged, as they already know about it and are working on
it in the overlay.
It'd be nice if they'd put it in the tree, hard-masked if necessary.
That's the frustration with overlays. They're fine with betas and rcs
and whatever, but once upstream releases, moving it to the tree proper,
even if hard masked, would be nice. But some devs/projects prefer to
continue with the overlay until all the problems are worked out, which is
frustrating for those who want to test it, and are willing to do so even
if they have to unmask it, regardless of whatever's keeping it hard
masked.
Anyway, it's apparently in the mozilla overlay. Either merge layman if
necessary and use it to manage your overlays, adding the mozilla overlay
there, or handle the overlay (which requires subversion) manually, or
wait... I guess.

Well, I just installed FF 3.5 last night, so I wonder why it is that you're

Not to mention according to [0] and [1], FF 3.5 is still in the tree. I'm going
to assume that not all mirrors have synced yet, so maybe that's the problem.

Okay, based on what I read, the ebuild was masked ~amd64, right? If so,
the Accepting the ~amd64 keyword should allow me to install it, right?
If that's the case, then my portage doesn't have it.

You need to unmask it in your package.unmask/package.keywords
files/directories Emerge the "autounmask" util to make this task dead
simple. :)

No, it's not just arch masked. It's masked in package.mask. So
simply using a keyword unmask won't work.
And you're portage does have it. Give this a try -
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" emerge -av =mozilla-firefox-3.5
But it's not going to let you install it without you doing
some work to unmask the package.

NO!! It is hardmasked in package.mask
Look at the (masked by: package.mask)
To unmask it, use
echo "~www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.5">>/etc/portage/package.unmask
Maybe other packages must be unmasked to.
You know if emerge =www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.5 says so.
Add the other packages to package.unmask same way as with firefox above.

I stand corrected. My apologies. My brain just isn't working, I'm due
for surgery to remove a large bone fragment from my foot, so all the
vicodin I'm taking must be shorting it out.

LOL. I read the brain isn't working part, then started with the surgery
to remove a large bone fragment... and you can guess how /my/ brain
filled in the rest... "from my foot" is NOT what I expected!
So now thanks to you I've an image of someone walking around with a brain
(with a large bone fragement in it) on/in their foot!
OTOH, I should be asleep right now. I'm tired enough such imagery comes
/way/ too easily!
