Hi,
This afternoon the advanced search page doesn't work correctly. I
get a 'hand pointer'. If I click anywhere on the page Firefox opens
another tab. The Google logo is in the wrong place.

   Weird stuff.

Anyone else seeing problems like this?

I tried clearing cache and also tried logging out and even rebooted
for the heck of it. Nothing fixed it so far.

Thanks,
Mark

I saw this yesterday as well.

Interesting. So possibly it's not a problem only I'm suffering?

I'm now having other troubles. I looked at what was new in portage and
there was a new Firefox as well as a Gnome upgrade so I took an hour
and let the machine get up to date. I'm logged in now writing this but
Gnome is hung at the splash screen saying 'Nautilus'. It never
completes.

I tried booting into a different kernel but have the same problem so
it would seem that there is an issue with this new version of Gnome
but I'm hesitant to blame Gnome when Firefox is acting weird.

No bad things in dmesg.

Looks like upgrades my my box get sick on top of whatever this Google
problem really is.

Thanks,
Mark

FWIW, earlier today I was having issues with at least one other part of
the net, Arstechnica, on an entirely different browser and windowing
environment (Konqueror and KDE, and knewsticker wasn't updating properly
either). Whatever the problem was, it'd even hang privoxy (started as a
system service, so not even on my normal user, it affected the entire
machine), to the point where simply shutting down the service wouldn't
work. I had to kill -9 privoxy, zap the service, then restart it. I
then tried again, and the same thing happened, including the frozen
privoxy.

All the while, random other sites were continuing to come up just fine
(well, except when privoxy was frozen, of course, for things going thru
it). Pings and traces to other net addresses were fine, but Arstechnica
was simply unreachable -- both traceroutes and tcptraceroutes ended at
the same router.

So... what I'm saying is that it's quite possible there was a major net
outage of some sort today, and segments of the net were unreachable. I
thought it was just ArsTechnica, but if you were having issues with
Google Advanced Search, it's possible its main page was reachable, but
certain includes or the like, retrieved from elsewhere on the net, may
not have been.

Everything's working fine again here, now, so if you are still having
issues, maybe you /do/ have something sick on your system. Hopefully,
however, it was simply a blip, related to what I was seeing or not.

Spoke too soon. I had gotten the arstechnica main page, but after
sending the reply here stating that, tried some of the stories linked off
the page, and it didn't work, then tried reloading the main page, didn't
work, tried other sites, no-work. Turns out privoxy had locked up
again. killed/zapped/started it again, and I can get to other sites
again. So something on the other pages is killing privoxy, and it's
probably /not/ related to what you were seeing.

Thanks anyway. I appreciate the information.

One other thing I've noticed about this is that after the update, when
I try starting Gnome and it hangs on the splash screen, if I open a
terminal and look at what's up I see that IRQ processes are stuck at
the top using 2-3% of CPU and not going away. This goes on for a few
minutes and then those go away. Eventually the splash screen does go
away but the desktop never paints. The panel is working so I can open
terminals and run a browser but certainly the machine is not up to
snuff.

emerge -e world time possibly...

Cheers,
Mark

Maybe. I just upgraded to gcc-4.2.0 (still hard masked, but that's where
gcc-config comes in handy, when something doesn't work with one, compile
it with the other), and did an emerge -e system followed by an emerge -e
world. Several packages stopped, but I was able to fix about half of
them. The other half, I just recompiled with gcc-4.1.2 instead. In a
couple cases (cmake and libssl IIRC), they compiled fine with 4.2.0, but
I had to revert to the 4.1.2 compiled version for various dependency or
functionality related reasons (libssl didn't work with some certificates,
known issue when compiled with gcc 4.2 at this point, and I needed the
old cmake to compile something else that wouldn't compile with gcc 4.2).

You might try running revdep-rebuild first, if you haven't recently,
however. Often that'll fix the problem, and you'll avoid the full
emptytree remerge.

I had the same problem with gnome sessions, but after re-emerging
nautilus the sessions started as usual.

I don't see weird thinks on the google link neither in firefox-bin, nor
in firefox (compiled with USE: gnome ipv6 java linguas_de linguas_fr
restrict-javascript xinerama)

I ended up removing everything that had gnome in the title, did an
emerge -e world Friday evening. That finished yesterday afternoon. I
rebuilt gnome 2.16.2 and everything is back working fine.

Even after rebuilding the problem with Google's advanced search page
persists. However the exact same problem showed up on my Windows XP
box this morning so it's now very clear to me this isn't a Linux or
Gentoo problem.

It works on my XP box. You can try disabling your extensions (run
firefox in "safe mode").

It really doesn't seem to be a problem here. This afternoon it started
working again on my AMD64 box but is still had on my XP machine. It
has stayed good on my Gentoo IA32 machine through this whole process.

It's some problem outside.
