[gentoo-amd64] USB to Serial adapter setup

I've got a USB to Serial adapter I want to use in Gentoo to talk to my 
Cisco devices via console, however, none of the docs I"ve found are very 
current (most for the 2.4 kernel), can someone point me to a good set of 
instructions on how to get this thing working?  I've got the module 
compiled and installed but can't get any farther.

Which usb to serial adapter did you buy? I want to buy one to hook up a 
fax modem. I heard that there are problems with linux for these 
adaptors. I hope it is false.

Good fax modems are still the ones with serial ports.

I use a FTDI based one.  There is a driver in the kernel.

Actually, the one I have is a DYNEX.  But after some diddling I found my 
problem, I wasn't aware until borrowing my boss Ubuntu system that the 
DYNEX USB2Serial cable uses the pl2303 driver.  I was trying to use the 
generic driver.  Once I compiled the pl2303 driver it works perfectly.

I've been using pl2303 based serial dongles (typically the cheapest
ones) for years without any problems.  The only minor 'gotcha' is that
this driver seems to randomly drop out of the default genkernel config.

modprobe ftdi (make sure it is built with your kernel or as a module)

use /dev/tts/USB0
