I've noticed on my amd64 systems that eix prints some nice extra
information, such as:

[I] app-portage/portage-utils
      Available versions: 0.1.20 ~0.1.21 ~0.1.22 ~0.1.23
      Installed: 0.1.20(22:36:18 10/16/06)(python)
      Homepage: http://www.gentoo.org/
Description: small and fast portage helper tools written in C

(Some nice coloring and hilighting are also there which don't show up in
emails.)

My x86 systems don't show the same thing:

* app-portage/portage-utils
      Available versions: 0.1.20 ~0.1.21 ~0.1.22 ~0.1.23
      Installed: 0.1.20
      Homepage: http://www.gentoo.org/
Description: small and fast portage helper tools written in C

I've been searching and racking my brain trying to find out what the
difference is between the amd64 and x86 installs that prevent this from
showing up on x86, to no avail. Is there a flag or setting or package
that I've overlooked, or is this just a nice feature that's only
available on amd64?

Try looking at /etc/eixrc. On my boxes I get the same result regardless of
arch.

Aha! On amd64, /etc/eixrc comes with eix-0.7.9, but up until recently
(this past week) eix-0.6.4 was the latest unmasked for x86. I just
noticed that 0.7.9 was marked stable for x86, so I'll have to update.

Thanks!
