Currently building Openoffice and so far the build has been staying at
the line
checking whether g++ accepts -g... yes
for what seems like several hours.
Does this seem correct?
Thanks

Thanks.
Can anyone shed some light on this build error for me?

You need to use the Blackdown JVM because the Sun JVM apparently has a
naming conflict.
JAVA_PKG_FORCE_VM=blackdown-jdk-1.4.2 emerge -av openoffice

I forgot to mention that it _might_ be possible to restart the
OpenOffice build from whence it stopped with
JAVA_PKG_FORCE_VM=blackdown-jdk-1.4.2 \
ebuild /usr/portage/app-office/openoffice/openoffice-2.0.4.ebuild \ merge
(You're email triggered my memory, so I've restarted my OpenOffice
build, but I don't know if it will be successful, hence the "_might_"
above.)

Very unlikely. At the point the build fails, many Java files have
already been compiled to .class files by the 1.5 VM. They are
incompatible with the 1.4 VM (unless they're consistently compiled with
a target=1.4 or lower directive) and thus require rebuilding. Resuming
the merge would not do that.

Thanks, I will install blackdown and restart the build, not really
worried about having to start completely over.
Is there any reason to keep the sun java package installed?

If you don't need Java 5, you can uninstall it. But I think there are
one or two packages actually requiring Java 5.

I notice that portage reports blackdown as
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-java
Latest version available: 1.4.2.03-r1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of files: 13,224 kB
Homepage: http://www.blackdown.org
Description: 32bit java emulation for amd64
License: sun-bcla-java-vm
I do not see one so I guess there is no 64bit version?

From a bit of reading this appears to be tied to something with a java
compiler.
Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Can you post your config.log? It ought to be in some subdirectory of
/var/tmp/portage/openoffice-2.0.4/ (or whatever the build directory is).

Thanks
This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.
It was created by ooo-build configure 2.0.4.1, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.59. Invocation command line was
$ ./configure --with-distro=Gentoo --with-arch=amd64
--with-srcdir=/var/tmp/portage/openoffice-2.0.4/distdir --with-la$

This particular configure run does not check for anything Java. There
might be a different configure script that does and fails.
But I don't know where, or where its log would be.

I am looking around, but so far no luck.

Well I managed to get passed the javac error problem.
Found blackdown-jdk and blackdown-jre and the default was set to the jre
so the javac was not able to be found.
Removed -jre and -jdk, reinstalled jdk, and also had to correct a
problem in a file that determines the javac, as per Gentoo pages on JAVA
setups.
Have a new error but will post it in a new mail.
Thanks all for the help with this one.
