I had the same issue with xorg 6.8

fixed by using xorg 7.0 or 7.1 and latest ati drivers.

There is also an option in xorg.conf you can use to disable the 
acceleration for that particular problem - can't remember which one (or 
just disable acceleration globally)

I can't wait for ATI to open-source their crappy slaveryware drivers.
