I did something kind of stupid and FUBAR'd apache. I am now trying to
remove it and re-install it as if it were a new install. What's the way
to do it? I have tried unmerge and re-emerged it, but no good. Any ideas?

What error does it give you? Have you tried deleting all the files
after unmerging?
Yours,
Craig

Emerge thinks it is helping you by not removing any config files that
you have generated or altered (and I agree with it) so, "emerge -C
apache" and then remove the config files (or move them out of the way)
and then re-emerge it.

Portage has a somewhat questionable feature called "config
protection"[1]. You've got to delete the config files (or better move
them somewhere).

That did it. I thought I had removed all files left after unmerging,
but apparently not. I cleaned all that out I could find and now it
works. Thanks.
