Hi all,

anyone tried to install quake4-bin?
I've installed
games-fps/quake4-bin-1.0.5 +alsa -cdinstall -dedicated +opengl
but when I've run quake4, see "Initializing menus" and then black screen.

Any ideas?

I have it installed and had some initial problems with the display. By
default Q4 is set to 'seta r_mode "3"', which is supposed to be 640x480.
However, on my system (native resolution is 1920x1200), it tried to set
640x1200, so half the screen was black.

Try editing the file, ~/.quake4/q4base/Quake4Config.cfg, and changing
the r_mode to "4" or "5". I tried "5", which is 1024x768, and got a
whole screen.

    seta r_mode "5"

BTW, if you are using alsa for sound, Q4 sets it to use the default pcm,
which sounded pretty crappy on my Audigy2. I switched it to use
surround51 and got pretty decent sound. You can change the sound to one
of the listed configs in /usr/share/alsa/pcm/*.conf by setting:

    seta s_alsa_pcm "surround51"

in ~/.quake4/q4base/Quake4Config.cfg

Please turn off HTML generation in your client. It tends to be looked
upon with rather more than a little disfavor on most FLOSS community
lists, due to the fact that it is so popular a choice for sending malware
and spam.
