i have GA-K8N Ultra (nForce4 Ultra without SLI)
+
ATi RADEON X700Pro
kernel version is 2.6.13
i CANNOT start X.. my comp freezes (only RESET helps)
i found some messages in my logs like this :
< SOME LOG TEXT SKIPPED >
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:0b.0 to 64
pcie_portdrv_probe->Dev[005d:10de] has invalid IRQ. Check vendor BIOS
assign_interrupt_mode Found MSI capability
< SOME LOG TEXT SKIPPED >
i think that string "pcie_portdrv_probe->Dev[005d:10de] has invalid IRQ. Check vendor BIOS" points to my problem..
i don't like that string, but i don't know how to eliminate it..

This may be a long shot, but I have a very similar problem on my system,
Asus SK8N VE Delux, ATI 9800XT (agp), 2.6.11-gentoo-r7 and the /evil/
ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2.
From a cold boot, if I load straigt into Gentoo, X hangs the box. I can
do is ssh in from a client and reboot (or reset if I'm lazy). I have not
found any real erros in the logs, but next time I cold boot, I will see
if I get simialr messages as below.
To correct the problem, I have to boot into Windows first. This seems to
initalize what ever is not functioning properly. I then shutdown and
restart back into Gentoo, and X starts up fine.
When ever I power of my system, I must always boot Windows first, then
warm boot into Gentoo. This is something sorta new, as I had the same
hardware config running fine with the x86 version of Gentoo, no need for
windows. But after installing amd64, and possibly some later updates,
the problem arose. I can not pin point when it started, as I very rarely
power off my system. I have just been waiting for my vaction time so I
can rebuild the system and hopefully the problem goes away or at least
I'll setup a tri boot, windoze, gentoo x86 and gentoo amd64. This way I
can narrow down if it's just amd64 or some other xorg or ati issue.

One other idea, which I have not tried, but I will put on my to do list,
is to boot from a Knoppix image. This should boot into X (using x86) and
native video drivers. This may help or at least confirm the hardware is
all okay.

There's a Knoppix amd64 variant as well. I'd suggest trying that while
you are at it.

FIRST - Your videocard is AGP, but my - PCI Express

SECOND - can't see differences between cold and warm bootup

THREE - My Gentoo is x86 now...

Well, I did try the x86 version of Knoppix (4.0.2) and X did work from a
cold boot.
I did try to find the amd64 version, but had little luck. It looks like
the amd64 version is based on 2.4 kernel, and none of the bit torrents
or mirrors I found seemed active any more. I will continue to try and
find a current version of the amd64 Knoppix :-).
