I have been rebuilding my system. The toolbar icons for OpenOffice are
not readable. Some are OK but other are mostly black. Has anyone seen this?
Thanks,
Scott

I've noticed this too, haven't figured out a proper solution to this.
I've been using OO.o v2 on my Ubuntu laptop because of it. Version 2 is
a far cry better than 1. Does v2 build on AMD64 reliably now? Anyone
tried their luck?

The icon thing is a known bug in later Xorg versions that affects mostly
OOo and Wine apps.
I upgraded to OOo2 rc3 yesterday, and the porblem is gone. However,
that's a binary x86 version; I haven't tried source yet, don't even know
if it's supported.
However, OOo2 crashes my X server while browsing through fonts. I'm not
sure whether this is OOo' fault or that of my X server (the experimental
modularized version). I heard that the final release was moved into
Portage last night, so I'll check that out today.

I had the same problem with openoffice 1.1.4 some months ago, I solved
it as stated here:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-365639-highlight-openoffice+icons.html
Yesterday I upgraded the system (incl. openoffice and xorg), icons are
ok even though the patch mentioned in the forum was not needed, so if
you have the problem with a recent ebuild it might be something else.

You can fix it by upgrading to the latest unstable version (6.8.2-r6) of
xorg.

I had the same problem. I fixed it indirectly by installing the toolbar
icon themes:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=7131
This should make OOo workable until the fixes reach stable.

AMD64 support for OOo has been pushed back to a dot release after 1.0

That's supposed to be dot release post 2.0, correct?

This issue is/was caused by a bug in cvs xorg-x11 that was backported to
>=xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2
After a long time it has been diagnosed, and fed upstream. The fix is also
available in our patchset. This problem actually also caused problems
with wine and vnc.
