Apparently the 18GB disk space requirement is fixed, so it's not going to change depending on use flags, or any other tricks. I did:

grep CHECKREQS_DISK_BUILD /usr/portage/net-libs/webkit-gtk/webkit-gtk-*

Each ebuild has the same line, that says:

CHECKREQS_DISK_BUILD="18G" # and even this might not be enough, bug #417307

So it seems you just need to find 18 GB somewhere.
