[gentoo-amd64] printing has stopped

Hi all,
This is weird, all of a sudden my printing has stopped working. Now I'm 
not sure if this is as a result of updates or I have finger trouble 
(probably this).
Anyway it appears that cups isn't working, I get this error:-
An error occurred while loading http://localhost:631/printers:
Connection to host localhost is broken.

I have reinstalled cups, restarted cupsd,checked cups.conf and it seems ok 
so I think I have done something that has affected localhost, but I can't 
find anything wrong.
Here is my /etc/hosts:-

# IPv4 and IPv6 localhost aliases
#127.0.0.1	localhost
127.0.0.1	PC2.HOMENET	PC2	localhost
#::1	localhost

I just don't know what to do next, any help appreciated

Possibly it jsut crashed? Is cups running?

I had problems recently with updates to cups. I think I had to
uninstall my printer and then reinstall it. Don't really remember.

Linux printing - the least fun thing about Linux. ;-)

Further to my reply, I have just found out that the 
file  /usr/lib64/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi doesn't exist. I don't even 
have a directory "cups" in /usr/lib64.
This is strange, printing worked until recently.

   Not sure that's the problem. cups is working for me and I don't
have that stuff:

ls: cannot access /usr/lib64/cups/cgi-bin/*: No such file or directory

   As I said, I had trouble with a cups update recently. I believe I
did an emerge -C / emerge and reinstalled the printers. I've also done
a Gnome update recently so it might have been part of that whole
process. Sorry I don't have a better memory.

   I don't think you said what version you have emerged so here's my info:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I used your command and it reinstalled ghostscript-esp and gimp-print. The 
cups error log now shows:-

But when I checked I do not have the directory /usr/lib/cups.
Also if I enter ://localhost:631 in konqueror it used to give error 404 
but now just hangs.
Also kde's printer control centre starts but if I enter administrator mode 
it just hangs.

Just another thought, when I run revdep-rebuild it has started to show 
this error recently:
broken /usr/kde/3.5/lib32/libkdecore.so.4.2.0 (requires  libexpat.so.0)
It then reinstalls  app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs-10.0
If I repeat revdep-rebuild It find the same item broken

Could both of these problems be caused by compatibility for amd64?

before doing a revdep-rebuild always delete the /root/.revdep* files, or
revdep would still read that files and give you the same packages to
reibuild.
have you remembered to do also an etc-update or dispatch-conf (this one is
actually a better option since it gives you the diff of the 2 files to be
used)?

this is the expat-2 upgrade thread. i don't really see how this could
help.... if it's only the revdep issue you just need to remove the .revdep*
files from /root/ and run revdep again (or run revdep-rebuild -i, thus i
don't know if the portage version - i'm using paludis - support -i, which
stands for --ignore, option).

Portage's revdep-rebuild does indeed support -i.

However, that's not the issue in this case.  Note that the affected 
rebuilds are 32-bit, thus not rebuilds at all, but simply remerging pre-
built binaries.  One can "rebuild" them all day and it's not going to 
help, because it's the same binaries that are remerged each time, 
binaries that remain linked to an old/stale 32-bit expat library that's 
apparently no longer there either.

Find the 32-bit binary that continues to link to the old 32-bit expat 
library, and try remerging both it and the compat package that should 
contain the missing library (probably the same one containing the new 
version) manually.  It's possible that revdep-rebuild is only remerging 
one and it's a remerge of the other that's necessary.  If that doesn't 
work, then it's time to see if there's already a bug filed on it, and 
file one if not.  (Or just decide 32-bit isn't worth the hassle anyway, 
and switch to a no-multilib profile, unmerging all the 32-bit stuff, my 
solution as I don't/can't merge proprietaryware anyway, and most of the 
freedomware stuff is long since 64-bit ported, OR decide that it's worth 
/really/ supporting, and do the 32-bit chroot thing, after which you can 
do a real rebuild in the chroot, assuming it's not some stupid 
proprietaryware causing the trouble.)

However, while it's possible that'll fix the printing issue if there's 
some mixup between 32-bit and 64-bit, it's unlikely to in the normal 
case, unless it's a 32-bit app you are trying to print from, since 64-bit 
shouldn't be trying to load the 32-bit stuff anyway -- it should ignore 
it.

Revdep-rebuild to the contrary you don't want to reinstall 
  app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs-10.0 
You really want to upgrade it.
However when you try, you will be told to re emerge app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs with the arts USE flag. When you try that you will get a cyclic 
dependency with qtlibs!

My work around was the following:
echo "app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs arts" >> /etc/portage/package.use
emerge  --oneshot -v  --nodeps app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs
emerge  --oneshot -uv  app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-qtlibs 
emerge  --oneshot -v  app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs

Command 1 sets the use flag, 2 forces the emerge of soundlibs -- the 
dependency is runtime so forcing is OK, 3 upgrades qtlibs Portage will be happy
because soundlibs was emerged with the required use flag), and 4 emerges 
soundlibs again just to make sure that the files it deleted were not 
re-installed in step 3.

Bug 200171 and several related ones pertain to this problem.

I don't think this issue has anything to do with your cups problem.

OK. Lets tackle cups.  It is working fine for me. Lets establish what is 
different. Starting with defining which version of cups you have.

Can you post the output from 
    emerge -pv cups

I have 
[ebuild   R   ] net-print/cups-1.2.12-r2  USE="X dbus jpeg nls pam png samba ssl tiff -ldap -php -ppds -slp" 0 kB 

which was the latest stable amd64 as of 2007-12-07 23:00UTC or so.


/usr/lib64/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi looks fishy to me. On my system  the 
path is  /usr/libexec/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi.

What are the outputs of 
   ls -ld /lib*
and
   ls -ld /usr/lib*

What is the output of 
   file /usr/libexec/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi

What is the output of 
   equery files cups |grep cgi-bin
If you don't have equery then you need to emerge app-portage/gentoolkit
first.

Have you updated your configuration files since you last emerged cups?
If not you probably should. ( I use dispatch-conf so I can see the 
differences.)

Have you restarted cupsd (or rebooted) since you last emerged cups?
If not try executing 
   /etc/init.d/cupsd restart

Hi all,
Sorry to reply to my own post but I have just fixed this problem!!!!
I made a link "ln -s /usr/libexec/cups /usr/lib64/cups", restarted cups, 
did a print and my printer sprang into life.

Will this link cause me any problems?
Is their a better way of doing this?
Does this indicate a reason as to why this has happened to me and others?
I can't help feeling that I've missed something when using dispatch-conf 
after all of the updates I have done recently.

Comments and advice welcome.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your interest in this problem.
This morning whilst trying to figure out what the problem was, I decided 
to create a link from /usr/lib64/cups to /usr/libexec/cups.
I restarted the cups server and I could print again.

I have just looked at my cups.conf and it had the line
ServerBin /usr/lib64/cups
so I have changed that and will delete my soft link.

however, I get an error "404 Not Found" when I try to bring cups up in 
konqueror using ://localhost:631.

Try 
grep -i DocumentRoot /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
If you have an entry, delete it. restart cupsd.

It appears that you have a very old cupsd.conf file. Who knows what other
cruft you have in it. The Gentoo cups ebuilds have changed a lot in the
past 18 months vis-avis where they put stuff. I would suggest that you 
move /etc/cups to somewhere safe and do 
   emerge --sync
   emerge --oneshot -uv cups
   dispatch-conf

With dispatch conf accept the *new* config files. If necessary tweak the 
new files to reflect your particular hardware/network/permissions, etc.
Do this rather than keep the old files or keep and tweak the old files.
Restart cupsd and see if it behaves better.

I suggest syncing and updating because there was a new stable ebuild 
released this weekend.

I believe that my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf is vanilla as installed by the 
ebuild. It has very little in it, nothing re file location.

I removed the DocumentRoot entry, restarted cups and now I can use 
localhost:631 in konqueror.
I will now take your advise and install a fresh cups later today.

Just my opinion but prior to the reinstall consider removing any links
you set up by hand during your debug period.

Speaking from experience this sort of thing has caused me problems in the past.
