[gentoo-amd64] Playing DVD problems

Is it possible to play DVD's under Gentoo AMD64? I can mount and read
the discs fine. I have been trying to use Totem to play DVDs and all I
get is "Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not
have the appropriate plugins to handle it"

I found a suggestion in a Gentoo Forum to run this command to find out
what is missing:
emerge -sv gst-plugins | grep -B 2 "Not Installed"
This produced a long list of mostly masked packages. Totem is built with
dvd support and I have the amd64codecs installed. I also have libdvdcss
installed. Is there a good howto on DVD under Gentoo?

I use VLC to watch my DVD's. That works fine.
Maybe worth a try?

I use ogle (I think that's the name) and goggles to play DVDs all the 
time.

totem uses the gstreamer framework to play any media. Gstreamer needs
for everything it should decode a plugin - for DVD it is
media-plugins/gst-plugins-dvdread.
A quick test showed me, that when someone select "Plav CD/DVD" in
movies, it won't start the DVD. If someone uses gnome's "Disk Mounter"
or in "totem dvd://" or in "Open Location" under Movies types dvd:// -
it works.

I personnaly prefer xine for DVD's, because it shows the dvd-menus and
as far as I know, it's the only one who does this.

Besides you need for most DVD's media-libs/libdvdcss for decryption. You
 should check if it is installed. If not, check your USE-Flag (dvd for
xine-lib).

I use xine to play movies. No problems here:

Might as well toss my suggestion in with the others.  kaffeine is what I 
use here, with the xine backend.  I've had no problems, and I like its UI 
and options. =8^)

Of course, it's a KDE app, which will detour the GNOME heads much as a 
GNOME app would detour me. =8^)  (Totem's GNOME, AFAIK.)

the answer is simple:
kde - kaffeine+xine+libdvdcss2+the libdvd needed
gnome - totem +xine+libdvdcss2+ the libdvd needed
kde/gnome/others - mplayer.

these are the 3 main choices that are best.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have a feeling there is something
odd that is missing or configured incorrectly on my system. I mentioned
that I tried to get Totem to work. I use gnome and have everything
installed for totem listed above except xine. Maybe I will try that
next. From the other suggestions so far I decided to try vlc as I had
heard a lot of good things about it recently. I emerged vlc and it
grabbed three other packages as well. I ended up with a vlc command line
install and nothing but the --help that didn't get me anywhere. I have
enabled the wxwindows for vlc and am reinstalling it. Gentoo does not
list a libdvdcss2+ version available. I have libdvdcss 1.2.9-r1
installed as well as all of the other packages that start with libdvd.

I have libdvdcss 1.2.9-r1

i have the same libdvdcss version.
totem should work also with gstreamer, but i preffer xine.  i personally
dislike vlc, but mplayer is also very good.
i'd also like to tell you that there are some dvds (especially new ones)
that have a kind of protection that prevents them from playing in pcs. i've
experienced such problems with second quarter dvds released this year. for
this function to be surely tested you'll need a 2-3 years dvd that currently
play well on the dvdplayer. after you're sure about that insert it into the
dvd player/recorder and hal should recognize the dvd and try to start the
right application.
