For the last couple of days I've been unable to connect to
http://overlays.gentoo.org. Can anyone here say what its fate is? I'd quite
like to get a copy of the vmware overlay.

You can also just get it without layman:
svn co http://overlays.gentoo.org/svn/proj/vmware/trunk vmware-overlay

On a vaguely related topic - does anyone else have issues adding the
dberkholz overlay? This has not worked for me for some time.

That's the step that's failing. On further checking, I find that I have to set
the client's destination port in ~/.subversion/servers, presumably for both
me and root. Apparently svn doesn't use the transport protocol reserved for
it in /etc/services, nor does the Gentoo version create an /etc/subversion
directory for global settings.
Intuitive? I think not.
Thanks for the help.

http:// URLs should run over port 80 unless specified otherwise.
If the server is using a different port, you should include that in the
URL.

You're right, of course. Strange how the obvious can stare one in the face and
still not be seen. Now all I have to complain about is the way svn keeps its
config data: why client data in server files, why no /etc/subversion
directory. On second thoughts, I have bigger things to worry about.
