I have some ancient UMAX scanner working. I don't remember everything
that's necessary. I seem to have /etc/hotplug/usb/libusbscanner,
/etc/hotplug/usb/libsane.usermap, /etc/udev/rules.d/99-libsane.rules,
and /etc/udev/rules.d/92-scanner.rules. The last has just this in it:
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="1606", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0230", GROUP="scanner", MODE="664"
I don't know whether I put that there or portage did.

Hmm. I'm missing that file. I'll add it and see what happens. What
does "equery b /etc/udev/rules.d/92-scanner.rules" give on your box?
[Later...]
It didn't help.

You'll need the numbers for your scanner, presumably.

Good idea. Portage has no idea what it is, so I must have written it
myself.

Not solely a scanner, but my Brother MFC-6800 scans, and prints under
Gentoo, and it's attached via USB. It requires a bit of playing
with /dev directory permissions to allow the normal user to use it
however. FYI, I used Xsane, and followed the gentoo-wiki page.

I run both a 640u and a 1260 under Gentoo 64 bit (but I did install the
libraries for 32bit compatibility, so maybe that plays a role).

I have all the emul-linux packages installed except for java, medialibs and
sdl. I can't imagine that any of those is causing this problem.
In answer to Barry, I have this:
$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/92-scanner.rules
BUS=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0x4b8", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0x106",
GROUP="scanner", MODE="660"
Those numbers are I believe correct for my scanner.
In reply to Antoine, after removing all other entries
from /etc/sane.d/epson.conf I get these log entries when I plug the scanner
in:

So the scanner evidently is being detected and recognised, but I still get

Maybe the scanner is faulty, but it does work for M$.

The strange thing is that I don't have any scanner.rules in my /etc/udev/,
neither on Gentoo /with the Epson 1260) nor on Mepis (Ubuntu based) that uses
the 640u at the moment.
Maybe I'm not using udev for the scanner? I do have a libsane.rules in Mepis,
in Gentoo I only have udev-early, udev, fuse and vmware rules

I only created that file during this investigation, following a suggestion
by Barry.
> Maybe I'm not using udev for the scanner? I do have a libsane.rules in

Hmm. Perhaps I should try another distribution to see how that goes.
Meanwhile:
$ ls /etc/udev/rules.d
05-udev-early.rules 60-vmware.rules
75-persistent-net-generator.rules 99-libsane.rules
50-udev.rules 70-persistent-cd.rules 92-scanner.rules
60-persistent-input.rules 70-persistent-net.rules 95-net.rules
60-persistent-storage.rules 75-cd-aliases-generator.rules
99-libgphoto2.rules
Rather more than your system, it seems!
Barry, maybe I should look for a more amenable scanner? This one was only a
basic one for my mother a few years ago (she's now 85 and on her second
computer!). I've tried finding suggestions as to a suitable device, but not
got anywhere yet. I'll try the local LUG next, I think.

Don’t get what I’ve got, it sucks! :)
I got mine when it was already obsolete because at the time I needed
SCSI to go with my obsolete computer, and this scanner just happened
also to have USB. Using it with SCSI now would be much messier, though
perhaps would work better. I was replacing another, earlier UMAX
scanner that sucked so powerfully that the computer room had no air
left in it.

On my system I have /etc/udev/rules.d/99-libsane.rules which belongs to
media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.18-r2.
I emerged xsane, sane-backends and sane-frontends and except for adding
myself to the scanner group it "just worked". I have an Epson 1650 scanner.
I don't use it much.
Perhaps re-emerging the sane packages would clean things up.

I also have 99-libsane.rules owned by media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.18-r2. This
is the rules file which identifies the USB device as a scanner and sets the
correct permissions so that is just works. Please try emerging it again and
ensuring it is there.
Then run udevstart to apply the rules.

I too have the same file, but I've now removed 92-scanner.rules and the
scanner is being detected. The significant change was to put
SANE_BACKENDS="epson" into /etc/make.conf and then remerge sane-backends.

I may have missed that step before.
Thanks all for the help in getting this problem fixed.

It took me some labor to get my scanner working, and then, when things
inside Gentoo had changed and I tried to use the scanner, I found I
had to labor all over again. In fact I think I had more trouble the
second time.

I have used a Perfection 610 (usb) without problems for years with Linux
so it is unlikely to be a problem with udev/kernel.
Here is the line I have in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf:
usb 04b8 0103
This matches the usb id:
# lsusb | grep Epson
Bus 001 Device 015: ID 04b8:0103 Seiko Epson Corp. Perfection 610
You should not need anything special (32-bit libraries, etc..)
Hope this helps
Antoine
