I installed the default CD on it (Asus P5B Deluxe, with P965),
got absolutely no problem.

There is a known problem with 2.6.17 and the 965 chipset. There are some cases where it does not appear (when the CD/DVD drive is connected to the sata port?), but the common problem is that the kernel does not recognize the IDE CD/DVD drive.

Ah, ok. I use a Plextor 760 SA, so I haven't ran into the bug, then.
