Hello again, after three weeks' pain or more.

I see from the GWN that layman is out. I tried it, but it complains about my
proxy server, thus:

# layman -f
* Fatal error: Failed to fetch overlay list!
* Fatal error: Error was: Failed to fetch the overlay list from:
http://dev.gentoo.org/~wrobel/layman/global-overlays.xml
* Fatal error: Error was:[Errno url error] invalid proxy for
http: 'gate.prhnet:3128'
* Fatal error(s) - aborting

gate.prhnet is my proxy server, and of course portage and every other
program are perfectly happy using it. So why is layman complaining? Perhaps
I should raise a bug, but I thought I'd check here first.

Peter,
   Using the instructions here for the pro-audio overlay I used layman
and it's working OK for me:

http://proaudio.tuxfamily.org/wiki/index.php?title=Usage

   I cannot speak to any other overlays.

   I did have problems with eix not recognizing the overlay. That
wasn't layman's fault but rather that eix doesn't currently recognize
sourced overlay paths. (I guess...) When I put the path for the
overlay directly in my make.conf file eix started seeing it also.

Hope this helps,
Mark

Yes, those instructions are similar to what I was doing as they're printed
to the console on emerging layman. The problem isn't with the overlays
being managed, apparently, but with layman itself which seems to object to
being directed via an HTTP proxy. Or are you saying it accepts your proxy
alright?

Sorry Peter. I think you know I'm pretty remedial at these things.

I'm not clear where I'm using n HTTP proxy using the pro-audio
overlay. I run the command 'layman -s pro-audio' and I see updates
coming in:

lightning ~ # layman -s pro-audio

Currently my make.conf file looks like this:

VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY=""
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/portage"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/portage/local/layman/pro-audio"
#source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf
lightning ~ #

Clearly it's going to the net to get this info but whether it's
happening with HTTP proxy I'm not clear. Where would I look beyond
what I've shown here to get you an answer?

- Mark

As far as I can tell both from looking at the source and testing, it does not
support any kind of proxies. So if you file a bug report I guess it should be
a feature request.

Hmm. Well then I'd better put something in to get some movement. A
networking program that can't work through a firewall seems to be about as
much use as a chocolate teapot.

Turns out I'd been sloppy with my proxy definitions, and layman is more
particular than the rest of the system so it protested.

Sorry for the excess noise.

Add ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" to /etc/make.conf
