Hi!
Just assembled the hardware for my new toy, an HTPC with an athlon64 X2 CPU.
Right now I am contemplating if I should install 64 or 32 bit gentoo on it.
It's main purpose should be to act as a DVR for DVB recording, and a bit
of mail reading and web surfing... and quite possibly a bit of gaming...
I'm also pondering what software to use, MythTV, Freevo or something else?
Anyone having some advice?
/Andreas

Gentoo 64bit of course. Especially for encoding you wills see big gains.
However you will probably want 32bit librarys installed so you can use win32
codecs with mplayer and such.
This is not difficult and explained on the wiki nicely.
Kind regards

For being able to play WMV9 files you don't need win32codecs anymore, you can
just use a media player that supports ffmpeg which is able to decode these
files (since version 0.4.9_p20060816)...

Ah, that's good news!
And thanx anybody that cared to answer to this thread! The box is
installed by now. Only thing left is to find out what driver (if there is
one) I need for my Twinhan 3030 Mantis DTV PCI tv capture card. I will
take that question to the MythTVtalk boards.
BR,
/Andreas

Hi
Me, I've been running mythtv on a 64 bit gentoo for around two years now.
I had a few problems at the beginning, but now, my systems needs very few (if any) ~amd64
packages, and it is very stable.
about the benefits, In fact I went 64 bits because I found it would be fun. I don't know
if I really benefit from this.
As I don't read a WMV or similar, I use the 64 bit version of mplayer. But you might want
mplayer-bin.
I don't know freevo, so I can't really give advices on the choice. My only complaints
would be that MythTV now does not evolve quickly, and that some features I really miss
have been marked 'won't do' on their wiki.
But apart from this, It's great. (I only have a single capture card plugged in, but I'll
try to add another one soon, and then //feel the real power of an HTPC// ;-)
