The binary is working ... the mirrors are hosed on the source version,
though. They have the binary version and the checksums don't match.

I was able to get good source. It built and it absolutely hauls the

have you tried it with the new gnash plugin and the new icedtea (the free
openjdk java plugin that seems to be compatible at 90% with java6 ) on amd64
arch?

well, icedtea, from the latest news in my possession has merged with openjdk
ad java plugin and it supports nearly 90% of java around (this means that
there's no need for a 32bit wrapper for java with firefox).
gnash is now fully compatible with flash v7 and has about 50% of flash 8 and
9 serie. now with the opening of the flash format specifications gnash
should progress much faster than it was before. for example i've read that
with firefox 2 with gnash and java youtube (usually a quite bad site for
flash players and which has also some java code included, for my knowledge)
is playing well (more than 85% of videos work well and the remnants just
need to use the gnash controls to work).
but as i've said, i haven't tried it yet so i don't know if these assertions
are reallly true.

I've been using the source version, and the only annoyance is linking
some programs to xulrunner vice firefox to avoid the firefox 2
dependencies. Sofar it's flawless.

I literally just tried this and I cannot get a single flash video on
youtube to work. Not even their silly "see what's playing now" banners
load. All I get is a gray box and some garbage on the command line about
~ SWF8 not being supported. Advertisements like shoot the terrorist, win
a laptop, however, seem to be working fine...

I have been using FF3 though since alpha 1 and beginning with beta 2, I
haven't had a single issue. Sites load fine (even those that say they
will not work in FF3, like my college's online component), and the
browser is pretty stable. Only crash was actually the fault of VMWare,
not Firefox.

All in all, a great leap forward for Mozilla!

I had to nuke my .mozilla/firefox directory to get it to play PDFs ...
all the other magic seems to have started working after I did that.

I had some problems with gnash and it may not even be installed. I just
finished up a noble attempt to make some Flash movies for a paper I'm
writing, so some things are, shall we say, functioning in squirrel
emulation mode.

I had been using swfdec and the swfdec-mozilla plugin, back with
iceweasel (FF2 unbranded). When it worked, it worked in youtube quite
reliably. However, apparently there was a specific build-order that
needed to be maintained, or it wouldn't work at all -- all I'd get would
be the Flash needed message.

Some months ago, I got tired of that, and having read it was possible,
decided to see what I could do for downloading and playing the file using
kaffeine (other xine/ffmpeg based players should work as well). I ended
up using an extension in iceweasel (and now in minefield/FF3) to download
and save the file as *.flv. There are several extensions that claim to
do it, but the one I'm using is DownloadHelper. Now, I don't need
scripting or plugins or anything else active on youtube. I can just
navigate to the page that would normally show the video, and use download
helper from there.

However, konqueror is my preferred primary browser, and I discovered a
package for it, youtube-servicemenu, available in portage. It adds a
context menu entry allowing you to download the video, with several sub-
options to play it in this or that, save it as *.flv, or transcode it to
MP4 format and optionally play it. That seems to work a bit better for
me, so that's what I use most of the time, now.

As mentioned, I then play the file using kaffeine. It's nice to be able
to play it full-screen, with all the native kaffeine features. =8^)

After playing the file, I either delete it, or if it's good enough, move
it to my media archive and save it permanently! =8^)

Well, I was going to try icedtea just to see how it worked, and I wanted
to not have to spend a lot of time installing/configuring. There's a
HOWTO page for icedtea, but the libre_java_overlay mentioned isn't there
now. Is there another way to automate the install?

icedtea is in java-overlay now. I haven't had a chance to test it
yet, but icedtea-6.1.2 builds for me.

Does anyone know why cups is pulled as well?

as i've said i've just read about it some days ago and don't know if it
works but from what you're saying it seems that the article wasn't quite
reliable...
well, i'll just skip that for now if that's the actual state of art.

ps. when i've tried ff3-rc3 a site that opened with ff2 (javascript site)
won't open with ff3 of with konqueror3 or 4 with fake ff2 engine.

I don't know but I can speculate... I'd guess it's Java printing
features. They'd likely be controlled by USE flags that you have off for
in-tree Java, but the overlay/icedtea version likely doesn't have it
separated out and USE flag controllable yet. It may or may not be easily
possible to do so later.

I'm using mozilla-firefox-bin 3.0 and it works fine except that it
fails to work properly as a URL handler for thunderbird. I opened a
gentoo bug report hoping they can figure out why:
