All,
I've come upon a rather strange problem. I have a laptop with dual
Nvidia 7800 mobile chips. Since the updated ABIs in xorg-server I've
had to re-emerge nvidia-drivers after every restart to be able to use
any desktop environment (startX, gdm, etc). If I don't it give the
black screen that only responds to soft reset(ctrl-Alt-Del) or power
down. The Xorg.0.log.old is what the log shows when it works. The
other is what it shows when it fails. I've attached the xorg.conf,
lspci output, and my emerge --info. I've set the laptop key
in /etc/modules.d/nvidia to 3, 0xFFFFFFFF and commented it out entirely.
It does not appear to have any effect. I can continue to re-emerge
nvidia-drivers at the start of every session, but it does get old after
the third or fourth time.

I can't seem to track down anyone with a similar problem using google,
so I figured I'd try here where the big brains hangout :-). Any
assistance will be appreciated.

B Vance

The only version that I haven't tried it with is Nvidia-drivers
100.14.23, I try to avoid hard masked ebuilds if at all possible. The
last driver that worked "properly" was 1.0.9639, with the previous
stable ABI of xorg-server.

I'm assuming that the 169.04 you're referring to is Nvidia-settings.
I haven't tried the masked version yet. Would that have this kind of
effect? I thought it just modified xorg.conf if you ran it.

Thanks for the info and assistance.

I can't change to console mode. The only key presses that appear to do
anything are ctrl-Alt-Del. The screen goes to black and the drive light
flickers. Beyond that it seems to be dead as a door-nail.

B Vance <anonymous.pseudonym.88@gmail.com> posted

Well, if it takes the 3-finger salute, it's not dead. init, which
handles that sequence, remains alive, and can initiate the restart
sequence (init level 6), with the shutdown scripts running so it can run
bash and the like. (That's good, as it least it means you get to shut
down gracefully and don't endanger any data not yet written to disk.)

It would appear to be X that's dead, not the machine as a whole.

You say you can't switch to console mode, but that can mean different
things to different people. Does that mean you've tried Ctrl-Alt-F1,
etc, to see if the VT switcher works? Also try Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc, which
should (unless you've disabled it in your xorg.conf) kill X and return
you to a console prompt.

If none of those work directly, do you have magic sysrq turned on in your
kernel? CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ, located under the kernel hacking menu in
menuconfig. If you are running a kernel with that configured in, you
have a few more options as well.

Even when the three-finger-salute doesn't work (of course, if it does,
use it), you can still try Alt-Sysrq-S (emergency-sync filesystems, do
this three times to be safe), Alt-Sysrq-U (unmount what can be unmounted,
remount-read-only the rest), Alt-Sysrq-B (reboot). That's handled
directly by the kernel, so as long as it isn't too far gone, you can
still avoid most problems of an unclean shutdown. Of course, if the
kernel is gone too, or at least gone far enough it doesn't trust itself
to reliably write anything to the disk lest it write in the wrong place,
this won't work, but it's always worth a try if Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't doing
anything.

However, that's for when things get /real/ bad. Since you can still do
Ctrl-Alt-Del, you don't have to try the Alt-sysrq-s,u,b thing. There
remain a couple other useful sequences to try, however.

Alt-sysrq-k (SAK, secure-access-key/system-attention-key) normally kills
everything running on the current virtual console; init normally restarts
the login daemon after that, giving you a chance to log back in. This
may work. Try Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to the first VC if necessary after
that.

Alt-sysrq-r (unRaw the keyboard mode) can also help, at times,
particularly when X crashes. If your VT-switcher keys (Ctrl-Alt-F?)
aren't working, sometimes that'll get them working again, so you can get
a console to work in.

If none of that is working, then the system is in pretty bad shape
regardless, and initiating shutdown (either c-a-d or alt-sysrq-sub as
necessary) is probably best anyway. However, at least in my experience
it's rare that ctrl-alt-del works if I can't get a console using one of
the methods above, so given that it /is/ working for you, it's fairly
likely you can get a console /one/ way or another. Of course, that's
assuming you hadn't already tried all that, but you didn't mention it, so
I figured it's worth the shot.

After the system restarts, it shows [1] nvidia * [2] xorg-x11. I'm
hoping that the asterix by nvidia indicates that it isn't dropping the
opengl setting from nvidia that is causing this.

I have tried Ctrl-Alt-F1-F6 F8-F12, Ctrl-Alt-Bkspace, Ctrl-Alt-+ and
Ctrl-Alt--. I don't have CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ set, mainly because I didn't
have a scooby about what it is/does. If it matters, I've had this
problem with gentoo kernels from 2.6.19 to 2.6.23.

Now that I know about magic_sysyreq, I'll add it to the kernel.

Thanks for the info.

before you sync or unmount do 'e' and 'i' - terminate all tasks and kill all
tasks. Or some task writing to the disk and the sync is worthless - and the
unmounting might not work. So kill first, sync then, unmount after that.

I'm having the same problem, with a Geforce 8800 GTS and nvidia-drivers
169.04.
I first thought this had to do with the the new kdm from KDE 4, but since you
have the same problem, I guess it's something in either xorg or the nvidia
driver.

Apologies for my top posting earlier.

You might try finding and renaming every instance of xorg.conf on your
machine to something else and then reboot the machine. If no xorg.conf
exists, the current X will run through its own script (not named xorg.conf)
and usually automagically produce a working windowed environment (or fail).
I believe that if you have an old xorg.conf, emerge nvidia-drivers will edit
it retaining part, deleting part, and adding part. If this is correct the
possibility exists that the edited xorg.conf will have internal
inconsistencies.

BTW, being a slob I use the terms terminal, console, and command line
interface pretty much interchangeably (sorry again). I presume you boot
directly to a windowed environment (desktop) when all goes well. And that
currently the boot gets to the point of trying to start X, fails, and drops
you to a command line prompt at which you login and then type: emerge
nvidia-drivers, after the emerge nvidia-drivers, you type some form of a
'startx' or 'start a display manager command' which then works to take you
to a desktop. If these assumptions are coreect, an eselect opengl list after
the crash and before the emerge nvidia-drivers could be informative. After
emerge nvidia-drivers the list should be as you found it and it should still
be that way for the next start of X.

The laptop boots into the CLI, not the graphical logon. I'm guessing
that the 169.04 that was referred to earlier was the Nvidia drivers from
the webpage. I downloaded them and have now managed to start gdm
successfully after a restart, 3 times. Nvidia 169.07 appears to solve
the problem. My apologies to Volker for misunderstanding what he was
saying. As you was surmised, after the screenfreeze, the eselect still
had nvidia selected. I'm guessing that the nvidia-drivers-100.14.19
ebuild was the problem.

Thank you all for your assistance in this, and apologies for
top-posting. Seasons greetings to all.

Actually, Nvidia's binary crap *never* worked for me (GeForce Go 6100).
All the versions I tried (all from portage, even the hard masked),
crashed the whole machine (!) a few seconds after the Xserver
came up. Seem their kernel driver is heavily broken.

The free Xorg driver works very well, but yet no GL available :(
Once I've got some spare time, I'll join the cracking project
to get an free GL driver.

Back in xf86 times, their secret-code Riva Xservers already have been
unstable crap, but at least they didn't kill the whole machine
after a few seconds.

I strongly suggest not to buy anything from this company, until
they open their specs to the free world !

maybe it is YOUR HARDWARE that is crap? Overheating? Bad PSU that is not able
to reliable power the 3d part of the core?

hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of nvidia-on-linux users don't have
problems. Maybe you should think about that for a moment?

Quite uncertain. The machine is very stable w/o the NV drivers.
But just loading the kernel module and waiting a few mins
ends up in an total lockup. I could 100% reproduce this problem with
several nv-chipset based notebooks (different geforce versions).
Ah, and there had been an preinstalled Vista on that box, which
worked perfectly with 3D stuff.
So I don't think it's an hw issue.

Where do you got these numbers from ? NV marketing dept.?

and vista has a much better power managment than linux - could still be
overheating.

from the fact that most people who use nvidia never have problems. But vocal
minority with problems is very - well, vocal.

People are quiet until they hit a problem.... a good indicator are 'which card
to buy' threads. Most people say 'nvidia, had no problems' a few say 'I had
problems with nvidia' and all ati users had problems....

Have you tried their latest, x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-169.07 ? I am not
following closely, but it should have major fixes and improvements.
It works for me on GeForce 7300.

Overheating a few mins after *cold* start and w/ using the 3D stuff
(just by loading the kernel module and waiting a bit ?). Still seems
very uncertain.

For this year I've already wasted too much resources on that.
Maybe I'll have a try in a few month. 3D stuff isnt't that
important for me - for 2D stuff the free driver works very fine.

BTW: the ebuild conflicts between kernel and nvidia-drivers are
also annoying. The kernel parts should be handled differently.

More likely it's a poor motherboard design around the voltage regulators. I've
seen numerous instances where Windows works - because motherboard vendors cheat
in ACPI and power hacking via the bios, when Linux (or any other Unix like os)
won't.

Have you upgraded the bios? Or kept it up-to-date? Even for Linux, if the chips
and data paths don't get initialized correctly, problems can surface.

FWIW - I've run a GeForce 6600 GT for several now on a diffcult screen - SGI FP1600,
and, while I have had problems with the driver on ocassion - 1600x1080 isn't common nor
VESA, it hasn't let me down. In fact the only time I've had to drop to 2D is for the
old Quadro 1 and 2 cards running in some other systems.

yes, if the full core runs at full speed it could be happen.

I was very certain that the kernel oopses I had at the end of Novembre/start
of Decembre were caused by the kernel - nope. I increased the voltage a
little bit and had no problems ever again.

yeah, just copying an ebuild and replacing nv with nvidia in xorg.conf costs
so much time and is so hard to do. Whining on the other hand does not take
any time at all.

what are you talking about? conflicts? kernel parts? which kernel parts

Maybe the problem is that he compiled in the deprecated nvidia framebuffer
support?

It's more than that. Rebuilding the kernel, loosing fb and ovz, etc.
I prefer spending that amount of time on disassambling the binary
module ... ;-o

The problem comes from NV's (broken) package. Their "sanity"
checks seem to go against the *running* kernel, instead the one
to build for. So, in my case, it denies compiling, as the
currently running kernel has rivafb (but the target kernel won't).

Package is not broken. It is designed to install and activate kernel modules
(while running) and to modify the kernel module boot load list so of course
it "goes against" the running kernel. (which must be the same as the kernel
pointed at by /usr/src/linux.

>

You should read
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
and
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_nVidia_Drivers
carefully.

You need to rebuild your kernel to eliminate the rivafb (rivafb obsolete on
all gpu newer than riva128). And eliminate nvidiafb if you did that also.
These two modules are documented as preventing proper function of
nvidia-drivers. VESA VGA graphics support is the choice you should have for
FB support.

Quoting:
"

Kernel Configuration

As mentioned above, the nVidia kernel driver installs and runs against your
current kernel. It builds as a module, so it makes sense that your kernel
must support the loading of kernel modules. If you used genkernel all to
configure the kernel for you, then you're all set. If not, double check your
kernel configuration so that this support is enabled:

Code Listing 3.1: Enabling the Loading of Kernel Modules

Loadable module support --->
  [*] Enable loadable module support

You also need to enable Memory Type Range Register in your kernel:

      Code Listing 3.2: Enabling MTRR

Processor and Features --->
[*] MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support

Also, if you have an AGP graphics card, you can optionally enable agpgart
support to your kernel, either compiled in or as a module. If you do not use
the in-kernel agpgart, then the drivers will use their own agpgart
implementation, called NvAGP. On certain systems, this performs better than
the in-kernel agpgart, and on others, it performs worse. You will need to
evaluate this on your own system to get the best performance. If you are
unsure what to do, use the in-kernel agpgart:

      Code Listing 3.3: Enabling agpgart

Device Drivers --->
Character devices --->
<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)

Note: On amd64, the IOMMU controls the agpgart setting.

Arch-specific notes

Important: For x86 and AMD64 processors, the in-kernel driver
conflicts with the binary driver provided by nVidia. If you will be
compiling your kernel for these CPUs, you must completely remove support for
the in-kernel driver as shown:

Code Listing 3.4: Remove the in-kernel driver

Device Drivers --->
Graphics Support --->
< > nVidia Framebuffer Support
< > nVidia Riva support

A good framebuffer alternative is VESA:

Code Listing 3.5: Enable VESA support

Device Drivers --->
Graphics Support --->
<*> VESA VGA graphics support
