Thanks. X works with the tga driver, but only in 8 bit mode (but that's not a problem).
I also saw that many Gentoo packages are not *supported* for Alpha, but they build. Is there some place where I can tell when I manage to compile a package and test it ? Maybe in this list ?
Best wishes, Fabien

Yes it is. Has been for quite a while. At least it is in other distros
like Red Hat and Debian and the support was submitted back to the Xfree
maintainers (thanks to Jay Estabrook).

Matrox Millenium[II], Permedia 2 based boards and ATI Radeon 7500 all
work well and are supported as well. But, you should be able to get your
TGA2 going.

As my TGA2 card only worked in 8 bits mode, I switched to a Matrox Mystique PCI (the only PCI card I could find). X works just fine. But now I have another problem. I cannot switch back to text mode from X. I gives me some strange scan range (192 Khz / 230 Hz), and my screen stays black (well, greyish). Did someone have some similar problems ?
Best wishes, Fabien

I have a similar problem with a Matrox Millenium II card (mga driver).
I'm in the middle of switching from RH7.1 to Gentoo. On RH, everything
works fine but on Gentoo when I exit X all my monitor lights flash and
it doesn't return to text mode. Luckily I can either ctrl-alt-del or
ssh in to reboot.
I've posted on different forums (XFree, Gentoo) and haven't found any
help or answers. Which alpha packages are you using? I was trying
unstable (~alpha). Do you also get "unsupported relocation type" entries
in your X logs? What X driver is the Mystique using?
If you find a fix please share it with me.
too...

This is with gcc > 3.2.x right?
Please try out the latest xfree snapshot (e.g: xfree-4.3.99.902.ebuild,
in portage too). It should have some fix for this kind of bug. Post the
results in gentoo-alpha.
If it doesn't work post a message to the xfree-devel (not xfree-user)
mailing list and descibe your problem exactly.
Thank you
Marc
