I tought I'd give it a try posting here as well as in the forums. My problem
persists :( I even tried booting of the kernel provided for me on Jay
Maynard's LiveCD previously today.

TIA,

Original post follows:
"Hello,

I've been trying to install Gentoo on one of my alpha-computers, a DEC 3300.
But I've been having problmes with the boot-procedure. I've installed the
system and compiled a kernel but when I try to boot the kernel I get:

aboot>b boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-alpha.nogz root=/dev/sdc2
aboot: loading uncompressed boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-alpha.nogz...
aboot: segment 0, 3407452 bytes at 0xfffffc0000310000
aboot: zero-filling 291180 bytes at 0xfffffc000064fe5c
dboot: starting kernel boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-alpga.nogz with arguments
root=/dev/sdc2

Then the screen flicks black for a second and then I get thrown out to the
SRM console again with the following code:

halted CPU 0

halt code = 6
double error halt
PC = 200000000
boot failure

But when I'm booting the kernel from the cd (2.4.19) The kernel boots of
nice untill i get a Kernel panic:

VFS: Cannot open root device "sdc2" or 08:22
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:22"

Timeout. "DEC 3300"? As in DEC 3000 Model 300? I.e. one of the old
turbochannel bus boxes?

If so, Linux is not supported on the turbochannel architecture machines.
You could run one of the *BSD variants however.

If it is some other "DEC 3300", let us know.

It could be either. There is indeed a Digital Server 3300 (and 3305, and
3300/3305R), as described at
http://h18002.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/archive/3300/ . It's a renumbered
Alphaserver 800.

I've seen the discussion about this on comp.os.linux.alpha, but have no
wisdom to offer.

It is as described here. I've been running Slackware's alpha-port on another
machine just like this one. I'm sorry if my description failed a little. The
link provided is the machine I have. A 3300R to be correct. (R for rackmount
;D)

I'll be holding my thumbs while sleeping tonight...
