It's possible to follow the installation guide with normal gentoo disks themselves. The trick is to have the installation guide open in one tty and have the other one where you run commands to install gentoo. In the reading window gentoo has links and maybe lynx available to use to bring up the installation guide. Then you switch back and forth between those two windows keeping both open until finished.
