my /etc/conf.d/espeakup file has:
# conf.d file for espeakup
#
# Please check man 8 espeakup for more information about the options
# espeakup accepts.
#
# Currently, the only meaningful option is:
# --default-voice=voicename -- set the espeak voice espeakup will use.
#
ESPEAKUP_OPTS="--default-voice=soft"
speakup_synth=soft

in it. I'd like to know if that last line is correct to have speakup
talking through the sound card.
I used gentoo-kernel-bin and went with openrc for this install attempt.
alsa-utils and espeakup got installed too.
Another question I'd best ask before doing the jump is if any additional
flags beyond accessibility need enabling for espeakup to work.
By doing the jump, I figure to wipe the partitions on the existing debian
bookworm inside of gentoo environment then reboot.
I probably ought to adjust one default in /etc/default/grub so grub beeps
when it boots since that way I'll know I at least got that far before
doing the jump.
