I've seen other people run into upgrade problems when doing it in
pieces. Best anyone can come up with is that some dependencies fall
through the cracks somehow. I always run my updates as emerge -auDN
world. I also run --depclean every month or so, sometimes sooner. If
it says a package isn't needed, it is almost a certainty that it needs
to be removed. Keep in mind, sometimes it only removes unneeded
versions of a package.
